Disc Brake Coversion, B-Body
« on: May 30, 2006 - 06:23:55 PM »
Hey guys, I know it's a shot in the dark asking on an E-body site, but I know this is a knowledgable crowd.  :worshippy
I'm doing a disc brake conversion swap on my fathers 69 Coronet R/T, and I have two questions I hope can be answered.  :1zhelp:
1) Is the original master clyinder alright to use? (Original big block car/ power brakes)
2) does anybody know exactly how these brackets fit onto the calipers? (pic #2)

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.     Thanks all

Darn, I was just at the junk yard last week to get 2 rotors, I just unbolted those pieces that you're asking about and threw them on the ground.  I have the pin type calipers and never had to note how that type was stacked.
If I remember correctly, everything is stacked; large plate, then medium plate, small plate, then the bolt. It just keeps pressure on the sliding caliper holding it down.  I don't think that you can put them on the wrong way as the bolt hole is offset.  If you get to a junk yard with old mopars, you'll see lots of that type of caliper. Just trial fit it and see how it fits.

use the large plate & the small spring clip ONLY
large plate on the bottom & the spring on top with thew narrower end of the clip bending down through the recess in the larger plate as an anti ratlle spring touching the pad

Nice looking job R/T, I've done the same exact swap. The later police style rotors and pin type are the most sought after but these are good too. This is a very popular swap from the 73-76 'A' bodies. The plates measure about 4" across, I only have the one size top and bottom.

I notice no one is addressing the Master Cylinder issue. I have no experience but suspect, based on other things I have read, that there will need to be a change of master cylinder or an adjustable brake bias installed.

OOps,   Yeah the master cylinder will have to be changed to a disk brake master cylinder. The drum brake type does not have a large enough resevoir, piston,  and contains residual pressure valves.

Thanks Bullit99

Thanks so much everyone one of you  :worshippy :clapping: :cooldancing: You've all been a tremendous help
Now that I know the center brackets in my pic are the wrong ones, I sent an email explaining the situation, and how I was sent the wrong brackets, and would appreciatie the correct ones be sent to me. I've not heard anything back yet  :pullinghair: Even the picture advertisement from where the kit came from shows the 4 correct brackets.
The New England Summer Nationals are coming up in about three weeks in my home town :stomp: and I need to get this done immediately. WTF  :swear:
Now the master cylinder also  :faint: If worse comes to worse the master cylinder out of my 440 R/T Challenger is at hand.. Anyone got any ideas where I can get those brackets, or the correct master cylinder setup  :dunno: :1zhelp:  :1zhelp:  Thanks again

If I recall correctly, doesn't this swap also require a new proportioning valve?

Yes, you will need a disc brake proportioning valve also.

You can buy an adjustable on and keep the factory assembly in place  SUMMIT $34.00  it installs in the rear line after the  factory block  Will need adjustment to dial in but once it is, SWEET!

GOOD LUCK
