Perfect powerplant for Daily Driver???

Okay guys and gals - looking for a new heart for the soon-to-arrive Satellite (but this could apply to all of our cars.) I've been reading, but everything I've come across is mostly technical - I want some more organic feedback. I plan to run the motor for 100k+ if possible so ease and reliability are trumping uniqueness and value on this one. Throw your opinions out - I'd love to hear what you think.

My wish list -

488 - 6spd

426 Hemi - 4spd

440 - 4spd

What's the good bad and ugly? Are there better choices? Worse?

488 6spd. You need the extra gears, unless you like stopping for gas every other day.

440ci Kiesler 5-Speed if you like your manual. Gear Vendors 6-Speed for 6 short Semi-Auto ratios.  :thumbsup:


Either way the 440ci gets my vote.  :2cents:

I would go with the 440 5-speed or gear vendors 6 speed. The 440 is a tough one to beat for a great engine with power.

what is your definition of "daily driver"  ?


What are your driving conditions and constraints for planned usage.

With todays' gas prices I would not want to drive any of those combinations a half hour to work each day.  I agree, what is a daily driver to you?

a 318 could be best motor depending on your driving conditions and requirements :)

That's a great question - I should have foreseen it. I'm really trying to get a discussion going and help myself at the same time so I'm being purposely vague.

I'm unconcerned about gas......stop laughing, I'm serious. My current driver is my V10Ram averaging 9.1mpg (as of this morning.) My drive is moderate highway. The 360s I've had in my past jeeps always seemed a little anemic - the 401 was slightly better just hard to find parts for. I can't imagine I'll be okay with the 318 for very long. Since I'm pulling the motor for the tranny and frame work anyway I might as well mod while I'm in there... 

Thanks for the heads up on the 5/6spds - I'll research them out and see what I find. I was hung up on the Tremec T56 as a transmission, didn't even occur tom me that there could be others.

If gas is no concern, then the 440 would give you the most bang for the buck. Cheaper and easier to get parts are what I'm getting at. If I ever wanted to use my car as a daily driver, I think I would be checking out slant-sixes right now.  :lol:  :lol:  :lol:

I think theres still some more constraints you need to provide and that we need to comprehend to really recommend a best-it.


if gas is truly no concern, then i vote  RB 440-Stroker   (500ci+)  power, resale, bang-4-the-buck, ease of getting parts and fit in the install bay (maybe youll want to add A/C ?), as well as the amount of knowledge and prior experience out there on it.

moderate hwy driving Im not sure just how much youll need the 5 and 6 gears vs a 4 speed.

if you do a lot of HWY driving then, at min, a 5 speed


manuals are more fun to drive, but its easier to drink a big-gulp and eat cheeseburgers while drving an auto tranny.  If heavy traffic is lots of stop and go, it gets stale working 1-2-1-2-3-2-3-2-1-2 every 1/4 mile or less. 


another option is swapping in a 5.7 or 6.1Hemi.

I know what you mean about the V10 ram getting 9 to 10 mpg!

I would be thinking about just two motors.  The 488 V10 and the 440.  That is it.  Both have more cubes than you will ever need.  They both have parts available cheap.  The 488 with computer will get better MPG and will be more reliable, but the 440 will be easier to do.  Just my 2 pennies.
The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realize it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it.

Daily driver......gas 3.00 bucks a gallon. 318. dependable, average gas mileage and still chirp the tires

Id go for a 383 4spd.
Not sure why, just seems like a good combo in a '68-'69 plymouth B-body.
