I vote for a warmed over stroker 360.  Plenty 'o power on tap when ya need it.  But when you don't, it is pretty miserly when compared to the big cubic inch motors..........       :burnout:    :cooldancing:   ...Oldschool

If your talking a great driver for 100K with little maintenance I would go with a new model Hemi efi crate motor, 5.7L minimum.

Another vote for a crate 5.7 or 6.1.  Parts will be available, great driveability and it would blend the old with new.  Plus you still have lots of power, 425 hp with the 6.1.  The money you will save on fuel would be the difference in price of a good stroked 440 versus the 6.1.
Of course if you're asking us what engine for a DD that would be for your ego, then 426.

then i vote  RB 440-Stroker   (500ci+)  power, resale, bang-4-the-buck, ease of getting parts and fit in the install bay (maybe youll want to add A/C ?), as well as the amount of knowledge and prior experience out there on it.

The single biggest constraint I have is the longevity of the car itself. My drive-way turn-over rate is legendary - like with every other car, if this one cannot fit my needs I'll trade up. Therefore I want to be basic in my modifications (at least at first,) but also give the car a fighting chance - (i.e. no sense in putting a $10,000+ motor into a car that might not be with me next Christmas, but at the same time the 318/Auto pretty much guarantees it wouldn't.)

manuals are more fun to drive, but its easier to drink a big-gulp and eat cheeseburgers while drving an auto tranny.  If heavy traffic is lots of stop and go, it gets stale working 1-2-1-2-3-2-3-2-1-2 every 1/4 mile or less.
This makes car #35 for me so far (note comment about turn-over above.) Out of 35 cars 18 had autos. Out of 18 autos I've had to buy or rebuild 21 (my 2nd transmission is about to go on my ram making 22 total.) Three 727s, two TH400s, and two 48RE later I'd be a tough sell for keeping this one.

another option is swapping in a 5.7 or 6.1Hemi.
Its still a very viable option. I've been keeping my ears to the ground for a nice SRT8 donor or a cheap crate, but so far I'm running head first into the whole initial price issue with these as well. All things considered I'll probably stick with another V10 before switching over to a new Hemi (personal preference) ... that is if I can make it fit.

Really?!?! You revving in neutral then slamming it into drive. If they are well built and you drive them properly you should have had this bad luck. Unless they were 18 Honda transmissions, you know the type...1.3 miles to go into the next gear.

If that is the count, I'd like to see the count of your clutch repairs.  :icon16: :smokin:

Your rate of turnover is a HUGE factor.
With your turnover rate I think you should focus as much on "re-sale ROI" as squeezing DD performance  :money:

as ShelbyDogg mentioned you could always keep the motor you build, and sell the car with a different one in it but if its a huge change than its more time/money out of your wallet to go back and forth.  :money:

A stroker should button in just like a factory BB.  but if your not going to keep the car forever and dont want to swap motors before selling it off, just do a nice 440 or 383 or 400 and call it a day (-ly driver).

1 clutch - after 235,000 miles on my honda del sol 5spd manual.

My two biggest issues with transmissions are siezing and synchromeshes. My 96 impala SS blew its first transmission at 20,000 miles - case cracked wide open. The second transmission completely siezed at [lets say a reasonable and prudent speed] while racing a porsche through west virginia. My tahoe seized a transmission at [lets say a reasonable and prudent speed] on the DC beltway - the resulting twist damaged the entire drivetrain and totaled the truck (I luckly kept it under control and stopped without damaging the rest of it - or me.) My wagoneers were renoun for stripping teeth on their 727s.

The were serviced (oil/filter) when I bought them and every 15,000 miles after by many different mechanics (I wasn't allowed to work on my car in my old nieghborhood.) When I bought my Ram the first thing my wife said was "It's an auto? Are you stupid?"

That's some bad luck. 727 is one of the best transmissions out their, new or modern.
I've never heard of someone having trouble over & over again with a TF-727, many will tell you the same.

TF-727, many will tell you the same.

Every mechanic I went to actually. I was also told the 48RE, which is based on the 727, would be equally reliable, yet just 25,000 miles into my ram and we're getting closer to my second rebuild.

I've had exactly 3 problems with the manuals in my life (at least 500,000 miles cumluative travel) 1 slave cylinder in a jeep, 1 clutch in a honda, and one syncro in the Z28.

Some eddie heads with a 5 speed and some high gears... say 2:73 or 2:96 would be fun....

Seriously though, what are you doing with the ram to hurt the tranny???  I work on these all day long and own one. the 48RE has been the best of all of them.
