inside hood release for E-bods?
« on: June 03, 2006 - 07:35:54 AM »
I ran across this during one of my Ebay hunts and while OEM parts are bringing $$$, has anyone been successful in retrofittting a newer style internal hood release for their Cuda or Chally? It doesn't seem like it would be too hard and I was thinking I had seen some sort of universal kit at one time. I know the electric trunk release is do-able but now am curious about adding this option.

That's quite a good idea. I looked into something like that, but, it's either hood-pins or hood release.

I choose to have no hood on my window at 120mph.

The original hood latch has the provision for the cable so the only problem should be mounting the handle inside. It shouldn't be to difficult. I have added inside hood releases to both of my e-bodies.

So, I take it you don't have hood pins?  :dunno:

You can do both, hood pins do not keep anyone out, but the inner hood release in addition to hood pins at the very least would slow down potential theives.

Mike,
I installed that option on my Challenger.   I pull my pins, then reach in and pull the hood release.   I do it in that order so that the pin plates don't hit the pins and get any more scratched up.

Looking at your picture, that pull release is chrome and doesn't belong on a challenger.
Also, there are 2 types of mopar hood latches that I've run into.  One type, mounts the cable straight down under the release, pulls DOWN to release, and can be comprimised by hooking it through the grill.
The second type, which I installed in mine, pulls from the battery side and the bare cable is protected by a short plate screwed to the vertical support. Your pic shows the good side pull type.  I'll try to get pics since I'm cruising in my car all week.

I know you can do both but how lazy is that! You have to un-clip your hood pins so why not pop the hood as well.
Pop the hood while sitting down inside, then hop out and un-clip everything....lol

Waste of time having both IMO.   :-\

While it may end up a pain, the more steps it takes to open your hood the less chance of the wrong person getting in. I have even run small pad locks instead of pins on a daily driver plus the inside hood release to keep people out.  I have 2 cars here that were ordered , as far as I can tell, with both the hood pics and the inside hood release.  I always pull my pins before opening the hood.  The hood pin plates don't look good dented and scratched.  In the end it is your car and your choice.
