AAR/TA flat black?
« on: June 04, 2006 - 04:07:53 PM »
Hey guys,

I'm not a Cuda/Challenger owner (I could only wish), I have a 2005 Dodge Neon. BUT, I'm trying to do an AAR 'Cuda theme with it. I already have the stripes on the car, and purchased the fiberglass AAR-style hood and found a nice lip spoiler that is off a Cavalier Z24 (fits perfect too). Now, I need to know how to paint the fiberglass hood and the spoiler the same "flat black" finish that they had on the original AAR/TA cars. Does anyone know how to achieve this finish? I want it a flat finish...not a gloss or semi-gloss. My stripes are flat, and would like to have the hood/spoiler flat as well. Hope someone can help! Thanks in advance!

Welcome Brodie!  I have some members here that are good with paint and things so I'm sure you'll get some help soon.  Got any pics of what you've done already??  Sounds interesting!!

Brodie, I know some people that have used Black Base coat (with no clear coat) with good results.  It's not exactly the same as the organisol that originally came on the cars but will work for your needs.  You can also have some flattening agent added at the paint shop to dull it down a little more.

I hate AAR Cudas....no just kidding. The paint you want is Organosol black, it's textured...you can buy it right here http://www.rogergibsonautorestoration.com
I also have a few Chrysler service bullitins on how to shoot it right...it will cost you about $95 a quart. This is used on the hood, fenders, tail panel etc. on AAR's and T/A's.  Can you post some pics of it when your finished?
Thanks.

Alright guys, but don't laugh...I got the Neon for saving gas, and I had to make it look good, so I thought I'd try this theme cuz I just LOVE Mopar...especially the AAR Cudas!

Ok, here's the newest pics of the "AAR" Neon. They're a little big, so be warned...

And a few older ones with the spoiler (not mounted yet and just spray painted it...gonna get professionally painted and mounted next week)...

Here's the hood I was talking about (not painted or mounted yet)...

And here's what it looks like at this very moment (it's in the shop for 2 weeks getting fixed)...

Now I have plans on getting the rear section of the trunk lid painted black, along with the spoiler and the hood. The trunk and spoiler will get painted while the car is being fixed. The hood will have to wait for awhile. Also, I'm getting blacked-out LED taillights, and a lip kit from Mopar...it's a tasteful body kit that accents the car very nicely. So, what do you guys think? I know it's nothing fast or anything, but I plan on upgrading the suspension a bit and MAYBE in the future, an SRT-4 turbo adapter kit (makes the turbo from the 2.4 SRT's adapt to the n/a 2.0 that I have), but going fast just gets me in trouble, so I'm guessing not. So what do you guys think? Be honest, I don't mind a little critisism, as long as it's not in-your-face "IT'S GAY"...cuz that's just disrespectful. Oh, and if you guys can think of anything else that would add to the "AAR" theme, please let me know.

Ah, one more thing...know where I can get those front spoiler deals that were on the AAR Cudas? Ya know, those little black wings on each side of the front end? I'd like to modify them to fit my car as well.

that stripe is cool! look on ebay for "AAR chin spoilers".....there's none on at the moment, but I see them all the time on  there...they should be less then a hundred bucks....
too bad your exhaust cant come out the side like an AAR.....??? I like it so far! And I dont think you'll get any disrespectful comments....thats not what this forum is about, most of these guys are pretty cool...are you goingto cut out the hood scoop? You could go all the way and get a 6-pak air filter, and fix it behind the hood scoop somehow, so it looks like there's a 6-pak under the hood! Or black out the section under the center grille, and add road lamps too...?

I gotta admit, that's pretty darn cool looking.  :clapping: I'm sure people wonder if the car has some special performance package on it.  :grinyes:

Yeah, I was really thinking hard about getting the 6-pack filter thing and rig it up to attach to the intake manifold so it would actually be funtional, but it would take a lot of work, and I don't know how dumb it would look. And I plan on spraying the front lower grilles flat black and getting some kind of fog lamps to set the "AAR" theme off too. Also, I have seen many SRT-4 Neons with the side-exit exhaust on the driver side only, and would like to do it but I'm afraid of ground clearance between the pipe and the ground (I put lowering springs on my car). I dunno...I'll think of something different to do with the exhaust. I'm glad you all like it though...even though it's a Neon  ;D

Saw a copper AAR SRT4 in Schaumburg, IL the other day and remembered your post.
