HELP!!! Sending unit leak
« on: June 05, 2006 - 07:00:25 PM »
Year One finally after 2 1/2 weeks :villagers: got me my sending unit gasket and filler neck grommet today... Within 15 minutes of the UPS truck leaving my house I had the car jacked up and on stands... Took off the rear valance... got the heat shield off on the sending unit side and installed the seal now to see if it holds up and doesnt leak like the one i just had to replace :pullinghair:.... Will do the filler neck grommet when I have a spare hand to help me out with it.... But its progress being made next stop now that its hopefully not leaking full is the tire shop which was my graduation present from my dad.... Gonna keep the old tires mounted on the original wheels so I can smoke em.... :burnout: :burnout:

:pullinghair: :pullinghair: :pullinghair: :pullinghair: So started to fill the car up with gas and to no avail it starts leaking out the sending unit again... After replacing the seal is there something I am missing here b4 it didnt have a seal on and leaked now it has a seal and still leaks...Any other suggestions to help fix this?

Make sure the lock nut is seated all the way. You need to tap it around with a punch and hammer to make it tight. Just a light tap, not a full swing! If you get it tight and it still leaks, take it apart and check the lip where the seal seats. Maybe there is a kink in the lip preventing it from sealing, or the old gasket is stuck in there. Also make sure that the back side of the sending unit does not have the old gasket stuck to it. If there was no gasket there when you started, the gas would have been pouring out of the tank, not just leaking.

I know there was no gasket on the sending unit when I started because I removed the old one do to it being severly clogged and bought a repo one from year one... As for the gasket the person who tried installing the sending unit lthe first time tried to use a liquid gasket which is why it was leaking... So I guess I am going to have to completely drop the tank if I am going to want to do this right... It is a good thing there is a drain plus though bc the tank is just about half full or empty how ever you look at it... And thank you for that tip...

Hemi is right - it will just be a sealing problem - I've just done mine. Removing the tank would only be necessary if you suspected there was a fault in the metal work at the seal seat - it's surprising how easily petrol can track (maybe a crack or even a scratch). Check one more time before dropping the tank - it's such a pain in the a$$ to have to do that

Thanks ya I know how much a pain in the A$$ it is had to drop the tank before when I sent it out to get it blasted and baked so it doesnt rust anymore... As for not having to drop it this time I dont think there is any way around it I so me and a friend will do it.. Doesnt take to long to put it back in and it gives me the chance to drop in the new filler neck grommet also... :working:

Just just make sure you use some lube on the gasket so that it don't tear when you snug it back up.
