need to remove all ss body trim
« on: June 06, 2006 - 09:58:48 AM »
OK, here's the scoop. I am to the point where I have sanded much of the car down to metal and need to remove the; drip rail moulding, the top door ss moulding and the front & rear window moulding.

Can anyone direct me to a site on the process or if some folks can organize steps and tips on this thread. Also, I'd like to know which tool is the best for removing these.. I see there are many different types of tools.

TIA  71fish, ps i tried to post pics last night of my progress, but the server must be full.. it didn't take any,.

The drip rail top of door moulding is easy, just pull the weatherstrip out of the channel and you will find some phillips head screws. Once you loosten these the drip rail mouldings will come off. Then you will find some more phillips head screws below the drip rail mouldings, remove those and the remainder of the trim will come off. The front and rear glass is harder due to the clips that hold it on. You need a tool to reach under the moulding (Glass side) and pull the clips towards the center off the glass and release the mouldings. It can be done with screwdrivers but it is harder. Be careful and take your time as you don't want to bend the mouldings or crack the glass. Here is a pic of the tool I use. Hope this helps.

Mopar - great feedback. I'm not really getting a visual of the glass trim though when you say bring the clips to center..

Thanks for your response.

I wish I had a better pic of the clips but the clips are along the metal and hold the trim on the outer edge, the tool I posted will reach under the trim from the inside edge of the trim (glass side) of the trim and grab the clips with the hook, one on either end of the tool and pull them towards the center of the car or towards the glass side of the trim.

You need to slip the tool under the molding to catch the clip.  You then pull the clip toward the middle of the molding so it clears the molding lip.  You can see that the tool is rounded on the hook.  You can put this rounded part against the body and rotate the tool to move the clip to the center of the molding. You must keep the tool flat against the glass or you will bend the molding.  I put a sheet of notebook paper under the tool when in use to protect the glass from scratching.

This is a good read. I always wondered how that molding came off.  :clueless: I figured a screwdriver wouldn't be good enough.  :grinno:

Well, i bought the tool.. pried it under some, but didn't know what i was doing and felt luike i was gonna bend something.. :dupe:

Do I pry up at all? This is almost embarrassing. Embarrassing would be bending the trim and still not getting it off.

Slide the tool under the molding.  Push it under until you feel it hit the body of the car.  Then drag it along until you feel a clip.  Rotate the tool on the rounded part of the hook to undo the clip.  It will make a pop when it comes loose.  Keep the tool flat against the glass.  This works on all cars with these type of moldings.

Mr. G`s or R/T Specialties should sell the clips, you might even be able to match them up at your local body supply store.

Most autoglass installers have those clips in bunches.........  Good luck and keep us posted.....   :cooldancing:
