not sure what rpm stall to run
« on: June 08, 2006 - 05:07:12 PM »
hey guys. What rpm stall should I run when using a stock 318 with 276 gears? Is a 3000 too big?

That is WAAAY too big. A stock converter is what you need. Something under 2000 RPM is my best guess.

2,200rpm is my guess. Chryco did tell me one time how to determine the best stall.

But, all my boozing has me beat.  :banghead: ??? :banghead:

The stall converter is built around the engine spec ( cam mainly ) and diff ratio. I wouldn't go anything other than stock for that configuration. You generally want the stall speed to be a tad higher than the start of your engines power band. Important for a street car is that the stall speed isn't so high that the converter never locks up. Rule of thumb i've always used is keep the stall speed under whatever the engine speed is at 60mph.

With those diff gears, your engine will rarely be over 3000rpm under normal conditions so your converter will be slipping way too much. Slipping causes alot of heat which will damage both the converter and the gear box.

I'd suggest getting a set of 3.55 gears, a mild cam and a 2500rpm converter.

You would benefit more from a rear end gear change if you are not going to modify the engine and are just going to change the converter. Going from 2.76 to 3.55 or 3.91 will make the car feel like you added a couple of cyliders to the engine!

Just as an example, Mm 340 has a 292° advertised duration w/ 3:91's and have a 10" 3000 stall converter. It launches pretty nice. R planning to put in a bigger cam back in though.. maybe 250° @ .050
