Looking to buy a Challenger... so many choices...
« on: June 08, 2006 - 09:22:13 PM »
Hi all.

Well, I've decided to finally buy a Challenger. OK, now what?

I've looked around and there are a staggering number of choices.

At this point, what I really want is a 70 or 71 RT as close to original and in as good of shape as $30k will get me. (I'm also looking at non-RT cars with 440/6 pack setups, etc)

The choices seem to be few with those criteria.

I did find one, though.

It's a 70 RT hardtop with a non-matching 383 and 727 tranny. (this is the correct setup for the car, though)

It's plum crazy with a white top. The fender tag calls for a black interior, but it's currently white. It also has the stripe delete code, although it's currently running a stripe. I'd kill it, I think.

AC car. Remote driver mirror. Center counsel.

I think that's about it as far as the notable options go.

It looks to be in decent, unrestored condition. I don't think there are any rust issues.

The price is right at $30k.

Without knowing the exact condition, does this sound like a decent price for this car?

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

Welcome to the board Grec!  Without seeing any pictures, it sounds like it could be an ok price.  Are you sure it's a real RT?  Is it done or is it going to require some work?

Wow!  She looks real nice!  I'd say yeah, it's probably worth it!  Is that a Carlisle sticker on the windshield?  Man...she looks really, really nice.

:iagree: I concur. It looks very solid, though, photos always hide something.

Have you seen the car in person? I'd offer $27,000.

If the car is in decent shape mechanically and body wise, that looks like it may not be a bad deal providing the fender tag is there and it matches the body codes.

I've been watching these for awhile myself in the $$ range you speak of. Lots of variables to consider. Also MECUM this year lots of cars that didn't make reserve, I kinda hoping the tide starts to turn. Best of luck!

Unfortunately, no. I haven't seen it in person.

I'm in Cali and she's on the other side of the country.

The seller is supposed to be getting me some more pics as well as a more detailed description as far as undercarriage condition, trunk/floor pans etc.

From the sound of it, it doesn't seem like $30k is exactly a great deal on an RT like this...

Here's some more pics...

I wouldn't buy it sight unseen, a big no, no.  :nono: :icon16:
The engine bay looks a little tired but from the looks of it only minor cosmetic items.

Definitely offer a lower price, if it fails and you end up paying $30K what did you lose? Nothing.

I sure would love to see the undercarriage.  It looks like a nice resto, but you can tell a lot by what's happened underneath.  Where's the car located...maybe someone on the board is close and can take a look for you. (I know you're new to the site and might think that someone might "steal the deal" from ya...but that doesn't happen here).

No way. I'd definitely fly out there to see it before hand.

Agreed on the engine bay. From the looks of it, she will need some work.

Well, here's another question:

What would a car like that be worth in restored condition? Not #1, but a solid 2?

I still want to drive whatever I get. :-)
