Good luck with that, Ghost.   A long-time friend of mine is just now being sent over to Iraq.  She joined the National Guard to help pay for schooling and so far she's only been in school a year and the other one was spent with the Guard.

Okay being a military guy here's my two cents on it. IMO, if you're joining the Army you might as well go active duty. I had the choice six years ago to join the Air Force Reserves and the Active Duty Air Force. I chose the active duty side only because the pay is a heck of a lot better and in 20 years if you make it that long you can retire. At the same time another thing I would possibly look into is maybe joining the Navy? I know the Navy was downsizing a while back but, that was like last year and I haven't seen or heard anything since. One thing is for sure make you're making the right choice for yourself. Don't let the recruiter fluff you either and don't jump on anything without verifying. These recruiters are like used car salesmen so be cautious. Personally, I would ask him very few questions because they have to recruit X amount of people per month. The Air Force recruiters usually have to get two per month to join up. You'll get your questions answered there honestly and without all the fluff that most recruiters add to their talk. I know this from personal experience and I wish I would have known what I known now but, oh well no time to go back now. Anyways, I wish you the best with what ever you decided. Have a good one.

Wow Ghost what a surprise it is to hear you say this. I wish you the best. When I was stationed in Germany, we would occasionally be on the same base as the Air Force. They had waayyy better living conditions than Army had. I only mention this if you decide to go ahead and just go regular full time enlistment. Have you thought about what MOS? (That means what Military Occupation.)  If I could do it all over again I would've wanted to be involved with Helicopters in some fashion or another. They're awesome. Anyway, keep us up to date on all this and good luck.

I'd rather be in the Reserve, because then I wouldn't have to worry about being transfered from base to base, like I would if I was active, among other reasons.

MOS would most likely be ammunition.

 They will send you where they want you.  Don't expect to stay at the same base or even in the USA.
 Might want to consider the "ammuntion handler"  jobskill .... How will that help you in the civilian world ?
 Not too many people paid to load ammo outside the military.

Don't matter where they send me, the only thing I really have tying me down here is my car, and I can bring that with me anywhere in the US.

As for the rest of your post, my planned carreer is to be a Veterinarian.  There aren't many jobs in the Army that call for the care of animals.

 But there are a lot of jobs in the Army that call for medical knowledge - like a vetenarian would.

 Seems like loading bombs intending to kill, and saving lives [ animal] are at odds.  Just my opinion, and not meant antagonistically.

 Anyhow, I applaud you for stepping up and working for your country.

Why not just go to school to become a Vet?  You could even get a job in a pet clinic or pet Hospital so you could work with the Vets and get a headstart on your learning. Just remember the shortest distance between two points is a straight line.

IMO, if you do decide to go with ammunitions, you are more likely to transferred to another area...ie: war zone, than having a different MOS than that. The Reserve has had a lot of solgiers
sent to IRAQ.

IMO a wise choice. Looking back I wish I had done my duty and joined a branch of the armed services. Lots a of benifits and the pride of service.

Why not instead of ammo handling, you try to get into ordinance disposal. From there, it doesn't seem like a big jump to working with bomb sniffing dogs in a K9 unit.

Either way, you might be shipping off, so make the most of it. Good luck at the recruiter!

if you decide to sign, sign for the minimum amount of time, if you like it you can always sign on for more.....
