GAS LINE

Hey has anybody else experience fuel line failure. Is there someting in pump gas today that causes rubber fuel hose to soften and swell ?
I started the R/T today to take her out for a little spin. I started her up and backed her out into the driveway and let her sit and idel for a bit and my wife said she smelled gas and sure enough it was pouring out of her from the back end. I pulled her back in the garage and crawled under and it was coming from the sending unit on the tank area. Well as luck would have it I had to drop the exhaust pipe and remove the heat sheild to get a good look and the end of the return hose was all swelled up and loose. This is the second time this happend in two years. It happened up front at a 2 inch splice I had in the fuel line. I even have double clamps on all my fuel lines.This rubber hose has been on since 2001. The fuel lines on my 67 GTX have been on since 1994 and I never had a problem with them. Maybe the fuel line they are making today SUCKS !!!!
I was just wondering if anybody else had this problem !!

I had a leak in my fuek line last year as I pulled into a neighbors driveway.The piece of rubber fuel line from pump to the carb was all split and it was only a couple years old.I wouldn`t think the rubber is bad,if anything I would think it could be improved over the years.I think maybe the new additives in the gas might be causing it unless the rubber is made in China?

Perhaps a dumb question ? Maybe the aoto store didn't give you fuel line hose, maybe it was just "plain" rubber hose for non petro use?  Now your goin make us all nervious, especially those connections up near the carb, hot manifolds and headers etc.

if the fuel has alcohol [methanol or ethanol] mixed into it the alcohol will eat the rubber hose

I know mine had "FUEL" on it.Any other type hose out there that stands up to alcohol as I think we do have 5% in our gas?

Most of the fuel stations around the Wash DC area say 10% ethenol enhanced, so that's probably it although my fuel lines have been on for 5 years now and I haven't had any problems. I usually buy the fuel injection hose. Definetly something I need to check before heading to Carlisle.

My hoses also were stamped Fuel.
I checked the hose that I just replaced last year ( because it leaked) and it was starting to swell already so I replaced it again.

I used the rubber hose rated for fuel injection when I put my car back together. It seems to be better quality hose, as it is stiffer and quite a bit harder to cut, and is definately rated for higher pressure. It costs more, but hopefully it will last longer. The hot dry air here in the desert is hard on rubber.

Around here the BP stations use rediculous amounts of alcohol to cut their gas ,causing MANY problems over time.Got so bad that all the repair shops were telling people to not use BP gas but under threat of lawsuit now they just recomend gas you SHOULD use.Had a girlfriend that went around testing gas for a school project once ,BP came in at 15% alcohol.Shell was about 1% and most others 5% or less - Alchohol burns faster too ,see how many miles you get from a tank of BP vs. Brand X

Working on my carb. the other day I caught the gas in a bottle that was in my rubber line for less than a day & noticed it was a much darker color than the light amber of the fresh gas. That told me that something was happening. BTW it was BP/AMACO gas.
