Help- no juice to the starter when key turned
« on: June 15, 2006 - 10:04:06 PM »
Just replaced the turn signal switch and starter switch in my 73 challenger. New engine wiring harness in place and I'm ready to go. I turn the key and nothing happens.  The former owner had added a push button starter switch in the dash which I quickly diconnected and threw away. Anyone have a pic or diagram of exactly how the starter relay should look when properly connected?  I feel like it's something simple but I don't have the info.  Thanks

The first things I would check at the starter relay are:  The neutral safety (a brown or green wire with the red tracer - I'm a little fuzzy on the colors)  goes to ground when the car is in neutral (auto) or when the clutch is depressed (4 spd).   It has an L shaped push on connector at the relay.  This seems to be commonly jumpered to ground permanently.  If this is not grounded the engine will not turn over. You can ground it temporarily to test.  The other check is the yellow wire.  This is energized when the key is in the start position.  (I know this because my Cuda wouldn't start a couple of weeks ago after it's restoration. )

:thinkerg: If it's an automatic, will it start in neutral? If so, check the adjustment of the linkage pushing the neutral safety switch.

Turns out I have no neutral safety switch connected- the harness is missing.  The female three prong connector for it has a brn-yellow, black-yellow, and a black.  There is a brown-yellow that runs from the bulkhead to the G on the starter relay.  Which wires do I jump across on the safety switch connector to get the engine to start?          Thanks

The middle wire gets grounded in park and neutral. That wire should end up at the starter solenoid.  The outside wires on the trans switch, when shorted to each other, turn on your reverse lights.
