~ Chip Foose set to build limited run of modernized Challengers: ~

http://www.autoweek.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060613/FREE/60612009/1024

Interesting....this in response to the release of the Shelby GT500's... what a way to beat Dodge at their own game!

In the pic the rear fender looks like a Cuda's... looks exactly like the green Challenger from the early Overhaulin days (attached here).

Now we see why virtually all '70 - '71 Challenger projects have disappeared around the classified ads here in CA... :naughty:

Oh great.  Just what the world needs: more vintage cars being sold to non-wrenchers for $100k+.

Yecchh.

Foose is a heck of a craftsman, and appears to be a super-nice guy and all, but that resto-mod style is so ricey and so date-stamped, that you'll be able to tell what year the car was built by what (over) size wheels are on it.  I reckon in five years, Foose's cars will have all the appeal of one of THESE examples of "timeless style re-interpreted"...

:)   Great more affordable cars getting sucked up by people wanting to make money. They should just bite the bullit and make the car complete from new metal like the 69 Camaro kit they've been doing.

I can picture myself walking up to one of these cars I would be most interested in looking at the VIN plate to see what kind of car they started out with....

Kinda sucks, cuz this will certainly dry up some of the supply of affordable project Challengers. You can bet that they are going to be looking for cars with the least amount of rust, not rust buckets.

Maybe this will get someone's attention to the need for good repro metalwork for E-bodies...

there is always good & bad
Possibly Foose would have the pull to get some need parts made & it may increase awareness of the Chall like Nash Bridges did with the Cudas , so this could be a good thing
I am not a huge Foose fan but I wish I could do what he does , he seems to have a lot of fun

If I could pick one guy to have in my garage tomorrow.... I would pick CHRYCO PSYCHO!  I like Foose, but I would take a guy like Neil every day of the week.   :bananasmi

The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realize it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it.

  • "No, it's not a Charger!"
    • A little history and restoration pics on Cardomain
I've seen Chip at many shows and talked with him a few times.  He seems to be most genuine and thoroughly enjoys what he does, without the big head normally associated with someone who's "THE" celebrity in their field.  He was at a charity event this weekend at Year One and signed autograph's literally all day, always with a smile on his face.  I can't imagine living at the pace he does, doing it all and still maintaining a life.  To be that talented, yet maintain modesty is most impressive.

Sure the cars will be mega-expensive but they'll be functional works of art, not trailer queens and I don't think they'll become dated in a negative sense any more than a Yenko or Baldwin/Motion Camaro from the 60's did.  If I win the lottery, I'm definitely buyin' one!

I thought that if you wanted a custom car to command big bucks, it had to look good...

Guess not. :puke:

I can totally see why Foose is snatching up Challys, I had my 71 out on South Beach this weekend and people are like :droolingbounce:. The down side is a Foose Challenger will probably cost 150k+.

I won't bash Foose, as he does do some nice work... but I think he tries to get the older classic cars to appeal to the modern ricer crowd. Can't blame him for trying to appeal to both markets, but I don't think I would be bidding on one of his cars.  :grinno:

Chip Fooze is the man, his visions are great. He's built a few cars that some people don't agree with, but hey, no one makes a car the entire world likes. He's pushed out some real fantastic cars. Innovative to say the least, doing things others would have overlooked. Worlds best IMO. There are others out there to, but if they were that good they'd be winning Riddlers and running their own TV shows.....luck didn't get him there, skill did.

I hope he decides to do better paint jobs on the new custom Challengers.
If he can pick up projects and throw thousands into it so be it, good for him......

Won't hurt the value of the stock factory cars at all, these cars have his name on it, custom made, modern fittings....all this helps drive those prices up but mainly the makers name - [FOOSE]

He builds a couple of cars people hate it and people walk away.
Slow to applaud, quick to forget............Sick Fish, 32 copper orange Coupe, Bullets....

Well said. I am more of a purist, but I generally like Foose and his cars.
