Going to look at a 'cuda tommorow.
« on: February 17, 2002 - 08:53:34 PM »
Tommorow I'm going to look at a 70 'cuda 340 4 speed car. What should I look for as far as problem areas as I am don't know much about 4 speeds and e bodies. It has no rust and new interior. It has a crack in the grill and missing the red bars. It also has original paint which is so so. It has a 4.10 sure grip rear(added on). Non original engine. Are there any commomly missing parts that are expensive to replace. Also would a 4 speed overdrive work and how much do they run at the junkyards.

Yes the 4 spd OD will work in the E body as long as it is from a van or pick up with the long tailshaft & 2 shifter mount points.
Most E body parts are expensive to replace, problem areas include door handles [broken], rust in the same places B bodies have problems, Door panels  tend to dry rot if they are any color but black, finding a good 70 grille is tough most seem to have some damage being plastic & unbroken grilles are worth a small fortune. ;)

Thanks Chryco, I was figuring those grills would cost a lot. I would plan to fix the one on there, since its complete but has a crack. Sounds good on the overdrive. It'll be easier to find a overdrive transmssion over here over a new rear end with the price of pumpkins. The good thing is the pistol grip and console assemply is all there ;D. The dash is cracked and the seats may need to be recovered. The door panels are in great condition. The 340 has been replaced by a 318 :(. Are 340's hard to find in junkyards in running condition? The bumpers need to be rechromed. Is it hard to prepare them for paint? I always liked the look of painted bumpers.

Good 340s are really tough to find but the 360 make great power & are easy to find , Just Dashes can repair the dash, not cheap but the quality is supposed to be excellent, I like the painted bumper look as well Cuda Ken can give you a better idea on the paint problems with painting over Chrome
Good luck with the purchase, C.P.

Well I went to look at the car today. I'm still not sure on it. The price is $3000. How much would it cost to make it a daily driver? Interior is great doesn't need anything.

What it needs
Clutch needs adjustment
Brake Job
Needs new studs on rear axles
Driveshaft has small dents on it
New tires

Heres a desciption
340 4 speed 'cuda
new 4.10 rear
Rallye dash perfect shape
Leather interior
Rebuilt front end, rear end
new emblems for hood
new valances
new tips
15 x 7 rallyes in front aftermarket 15 x 10 rallyes in rear.
No rust at all.
a few small dents.
a small 2 in crack in grill
door handles work great
window needs work but everything new to fix
Hole in rear quarter for antenna.
Paint okay.
Might need a new harmonic balancer for 318.
Heater core disconnected. Might need just to be plugged in.

What do you guys think? Is this a good deal? Assuming I can do the brake job myself hardware is all new but has been sitting. How hard is it to adjust the clutch?

Is there a broadcast sheet for the car....

Even by what you described ,,it still sounds like a deal.

P.S antenna hole should be on the fender except on T/A and AAR...??????

Buy it !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for your advice guys. Hopefully its not already gone. It has 71 barracuda front fenders(non gilled :(), thats why the tag is missing. Possible mismatched doors because he says they are 71 mirrors? Also he thinks the interior might be out of a 71 gran coupe? The seats were leather and was grayish white in the centers. Did not see any gran coupe emblems only the 'cuda emblems. If thats the case the broadcast sheet is gone. It has a real cuda vin. Whats the code for the 340? Still would make a great driver though. Was dragged out of a barn a couple of years ago. Is it true ca 'cudas did not have tips originally???.

Blue 69,,,Your V.I.N should start with..

 BS27H0BXXXXXX        for a 340..

You have got to seriously consider buying that beast.

Total production for 70 Cuda ragtop with the 340 4sd is 88

340 auto --155
340  3 sd standard  --19
340  4 sd standard  --88

Don,t give up on finding the broadcast sheet...

Maybe do a title search ,,find a previous owner,,maybe they have some pics......

    Good luck   Blue

Thanks shaker Ragtop 'cuda? If it was a ragtop 'cuda for that price it would be in my driveway by now ;D. I'm not sure if I want to get another project, although this won't take much time to finish. Another thing the original color in the trunk is light green, is that rare? I liked the dark gunmetal color it was better. If I can convince my dad that I'm not bringing another piece of junk home than I'll get it. He still likes challengers better and would rather me buy a 72-73 challenger but this is one great deal on a e body. Anyone know the production numbers of a 70 340 cuda and the value compared to a 72-73 challenger?

By the way is this a rare steering wheel? It had one of these, might have had a fish in the middle can't remember. Same dash though.

Heres a picture off ebay of one

Hi Blue69,

I am no Cuda expert, but the pic of the steering wheel is the same wheel I have in my Duster!

It's called a TUFF WHEEL! I found another one on a Dodge Aspen several years ago in the wreckers for $10.oo and have held onto it since! What a steal for me!
As I was removing it a group of 3 guys came by gawking and swearing. I guess they came that same day to get the wheel, but I got there first!

If any of those dudes are reading this...the Black Aspen with Gold stripes, Road Runner package! Relax, it's in good hands!!! LOL!!!  ;D  (Mine!)

Thanks Wedgehead. Hadn't a clue ???. I was thinking maybe it was cheap aftermarket wheel because it wasn't the woodgrain type like my charger has. Definately worth another look now.

Nope, it is definately a desireable wheel! Hard to find, so...if ya see one, grab it!  ;D

Course the wheel might be worth more than a certain car, not in your case of course!

Seriously, I too would snap up the Cuda you are looking at! Price seems reasonable to me.

I paid $2800 for my stock 74 Duster in 1981, so from what you have said so far, sounds really good!  ;)

My old man has a steering wheel like that, it came out of his 76 Varloe/Road Runner, he told me he would give it to me if I wanted it for my next Mopar!  Its still looks good!!!  Been in doors since I was a kid.  I had no idea it was rare!!!

Is this your Cuda???  This is what I came with when I changed the number in the address bar, this is a 440 car so says the Hockey Stripe!!!  If this is the car for $3500 you need to buy it!!!  But I doubt it is...  LOL!!!
