5.9L Magnum / a518 Swap
« on: June 18, 2006 - 02:42:06 PM »
Hey everyone.  Been a while since I posted, got a new job, having a baby, and just getting back into my 73 Challenger street project.

Last week I got a complete 5.9L Magnum and a518 transmission out of a 96 ram truck.  The price on it was so low I juts snatched it up.
The good:
Ive got pretty much everything:  engine harness, transmission harness, computer, engine bay harness.  The guy even threw in the dash and dash harness.  Im not too worried about the condition of the engine, it turns by hand and has decent compression.

The Bad:
This is my first time with efi, and the amount of wiring is daunting.  Theres a handfull of loose connectors.  The overdrive unit needs more room under the tunnel to fit under the car. The original slapstik transmission linkage won't fit.  I just learned my original driveshaft will not only have to be shortened by about 3.5" but the yoke will need to be replaced as well. The throttle lever is on the passenger side, so I need to reconcile that.

What I know I need:  New transmission crossmember modded ~2" lower than stock ( I think I can handle this)
A good driveshaft shop.
High pressure external fuel pump, regulator, pre and post pump filters, return lines.
New shifter linkage, or modify the original...
Exhaust system.  I wanted to go with a tti system, but if Cat's are absolutely required, what else is out there? Can I put is a dual exhaust with only one O2 sensor? (maybe Im missing an O2 sensor?)

I know someone's done this before (on a 73 Cuda??)  I would love to know how the install went, what was kept and what was tossed.
Are there any other resources out there for this kind of swap?

Im not scared of the swap so much as I am intimidated by the wiring....

Thanks!

A 1995 and earlier 518 is easier to install. 1996 and later are totally electronic( computerized) upshift. Check out this thread, It can be done , it is just alot more work.

Since I know it works (and I just freshened it up), can I safely bolt up my 904 to the magnum?

Regarding the EFI, should I trash the existing wiring harness and computer and go for seemingly simpler MegaSquirt system?  It seems to me like there are a bunch of connectors that would just go unused in this application, and therefore may make the existing harness/computer unuseable (??)

The magnum has to have a crank sensor  that reads off the flex plate . If you have an early 904 the case will not have a notch in the bell housing for the sensor to go thru. I guess you could make a notch since the sensor bolts to the engine. :dunno:
