Put the 440 in finally
« on: June 19, 2006 - 09:41:10 AM »
And they said it couldn't be done.  I finally pulled the 440 out of the Charger and dropped it into the Challenger, again by myself.  I really have to make friends with people who are mechanically inclined.  The process wasn't too bad, I used some know how and unapproved tools to get the engine in the bay.    The only real problem I had was rolling the engine hoist over to the other bay.  Once I go the engine in postion, I used the old raise the rear of the car and lower the front trick.  Then to keep the engine lined up I used a bungee cord to prevent it from twisting away.  I did run into a problem.  I couldn't get the tailshaft of the trans down enough so that I could roll the hoist forward to clear the oil pan.  Of course I don't have any of the really cool engine installation tools, the engine sling thing with crank and tilt feature.
What to do?  I used a ratchet strap around the crank pulley to tilt the engine that way.  Worked like a charm and in the engine went. I was so pleased with myself.  :cooldancing: From pulling the engine out of the Charger to dropping it in the Challenger, 3 hours.
Now the hard part was getting the headers in.  I ended up having to raise the engine off the mounts about 4 inches then slip the passenger side header in from below and drop the drivers side in from above.  I'll post more pics of the engine bay when some of the accessories get bolted on.  For now I have a pic with the bungee, one with the ratchet strap tilting the motor and one just for show with a header on.
Now all I need to do is the wiring, fuel system, heating/cooling, driveshaft, trans linkages, new tie rods and front brake hoses and put the passenger side rear leaf in.  Carlisle here I come!  :burnout:

moving/guiding that engine hoist from one bay to another with that big ol weight swinging on the end had to be a beastly time.    Like a wrecking ball !

smooth move on the ratchet strap  that just might even be a lot easier than monkeying with the self leveler.   does the ratchet strap have a "slow release" to it or is it "all or nothing" when it come time to undo it ?

Like a wrecking ball, you have that right!  I lowered it as low as I dare to go and wheeled it over.  It was tough becuase the hoist would stop becusae of a pebble or something and then the engine would sway, the hoist would jerk forward then stop then jerk forward again.  Slow and steady.

Ratchet strap was easy, but yes, it doesn't have a slow release.  However, if you take the extra slack from the strap and do a single wrap around the hoist you can release the ratchet and then slowly feed the extra strap out and lower it to the point you want and then lock it in or just keep going.

And Rev, I won't lie, it was hard work by myself.  However, I am so use to doing everything that way now that I just figure out what I can use as a "second set of hands".  I also rely on C-C.com for tips and suggestions.

Thanks for the comments!
