clutch vs. cone posi
« on: June 20, 2006 - 07:29:46 PM »
Please correct or confirm some things I've heard about clutch and cone 8&3/4 posi units. 1)Clutch units can be rebuilt- cone units cannot (unless you have a machine shop). 2) Clutch units were first ones out, cone units were later production. 3) All 489 units were cone. 4) Never buy a used cone unit

Is there any real advantage or disadvantage to either unit for non-racing applications? Anything to look for when buying either, i.e. are there any obvious signs that you should look for? Thanks.

All I know about is cone type like the one in my GTO and when the cone is junk you have to replace the unit because the case is worn out.

Correct
I looked at 5 used cone sure grip & told him I would buy them all IF he would let me take them apart , I ended up buying none , all had the cones bottomed out in the case & were worn out
clutch type can be rebuilt If the side gears are in good condition if not it may be junk too
