Seat Belts
« on: June 22, 2006 - 06:44:47 PM »
I've got a set of three-point seat belts that I pulled out of a 74, the last parts car I had, about 15 years ago. I didn't think they were original, but a friend who's owned several Cudas tells me that 3-point belts were available in 74. This doesn't explain why there are no pentastars or Chrysler part numbers anywhere on these things.

He's not right, is he?

Are you talking about front or rear belts?  I know the 74's had a shoulder harness that went through the rear side panels in close to the same location the 70 SE had the ashtray.  It then connected to the roof of the car.  I think I have a pic.  I'll post it if I find it.

All '74 Mopars have the 3 point seat belts. That is the easiest way to tell a '74 from a '73 for 'CUDAs and Challengers.

I learn something new every day, unless I'm careful. I would still assume, though, that any Chrysler parts would have pentastars and Chrysler PNs on them, right? What I have is completely bare.

I'll try to post a pic later.

These pics are of the rear from a 74 parts car. I cannot find any Chrysler markings.

I bet the label is down inside the retractor (on the belt about as low as you can go) where you can't see it.  At least that is how it is on my '71 (I believe the year they switched to the retractor) so they don't show anyway.  Rears do though and on mine I suppose the shoulder does too.

Well, that does indeed look like what I have.

Next question: I assume that these need some additional hard points to mount to, which I'm not going to have in a 73 (please correct me if I'm wrong). Should I try to find some good way to attach them? Are they worth anything if I don't?

I do not know how the rear part mounts through the rear panel to the floor.  I do know the one part bolts to the roof.  All the ebodys have the mounting hole for this piece.  An optional shoulder belt was offered before 74.  It was a 2 piece assembly.  You attached it to your lap belt. The 74 belt bolts in the same place.  If my car were not a restoration, I would use them.  It would be safer in a crash.  I will try to pull off the rear panel and get a pic of the bottom mount as soon as I can.

challenger6pak -

Thanks for the info and pics. My 73 has the shoulder belts that clip into the lap belts, so if this can use those hardpoints it sounds like I'm good to go to convert over?

One other question on these. It doesn't look like I snagged the parts that mount to the inside of the seats, the parts that have the female buckles. Looking at the male ends of these buckles, they don't look like they'll fit. Am I wrong?

I couldn't take pics.  I just got home at 9:5 PM.  I do believe you have all you need.  The female part should be the same as your current belts.  I'll try to look tomorrow.

I finally got a chance to take this car apart and get a pic of the bottom of the belt where it mounts beside the rear seat.  Sorry it took so long.

Thanks. That is definitely what I have. Didn't think it could be original, since it just looks so generic, especially without any pentastars on it.

They are original.  This car has a little over 60000 miles.  By buddy has a 74 Cuda with the same belts.  Chrysler may have just outsourced the belts. I found the brace plate on the inside quarter also. I plan to use these belts on my 70 383 R/T due to the fact I plan to drive it alot.  I tried the belts in my 74 for feel and liked them.  It appears that the female portion of the belt assembly is the same as 71-73.  I will verify this as soon as I can find my 73 belts.

What is the procedure to run 74 belts in a 70 car. I was thinking on doing this with my 70 cuda. Do you have to change the rear panels? Is there mounts to bolt the belts too the roof on the 70's.
