WTB - New Center Diff Sections?
« on: June 23, 2006 - 07:57:14 AM »

I purchased a new center diff section from Mancini. The first one whined like no tomorrow so I they picked it up, made a new one and sent it back, still noisy as, this was like a train taking off, they were that bad.

So, I got a full refund and am looking for a place who can build them.
I want somewhere who tests there cuts and diffs for whines, like a pre-test "machine".  :chatting:

Anyone know of a professional well known shop who builds diffs without whines that are top quality?
I am wanting either a 742 or 489 case with a 7290 Yoke, SureGrip/limited slip diff with 3.91 gears.

Thanks for any help lads.

Cheers,
Carl

Carl,
I know you want a complete PIG, but did you ever think of buying a couple of dial indicators and some white grease and try doing it yourself?

There are so many books out there showing how to do it and once you have a couple of shim packs, you won't have to buy anymore. Every gearset that you buy is marked with it's clearance for shim thickness under the pinion gear. The white grease is to see the contact patch.

For the price of shipping that you pay, you could use that money to buy a complete setup kit, then do it yourself.
That's how I learned EVERYTHING that I know now, by wanting to learn and not wanting to pay someone else's labor charge.
PLUS, look at all of the cool tools you end up with.

Thanks Rob, I don't mind paying to get the job done right.
The Challenger has had nothing but the best and I have left all work to the pros.

If it were the 'Cuda? maybe, but not the Challenger. I want to learn, don't get me wrong but with my car in the shop for over 3 months it's more a want to get it out and on the road again ASAP. Parts delay from some piss poor shops in the States have held us back drastically not too mention Mancinis lack of diff building talent.

Bummer Carl,  :banghead: I don't know of anybody that I would recommend. I would think Mancini would be able to do you a good job. :dunno:

Rob,

Would you ID a book or two that seems to do a good job of explaining the process?

The only problem I see with someone doing it at home is you really need a certain puller to remove the large pinion bearing for depth shim adjustment. If you don't use the right puller you can spread the roller cage.

Start with the Chassis Service Manual.  I have one for 70 and 71. Along with those, I have a couple of magazines I saved over the years that explains the process with lots of pictures.

Thanks Bud, I tried that place and was amazed at how shlt their service was.  :eek7: :eek4:

He picked up the phone mumbled something I could understand and  everything I asked he came back with answers sounding like he was forced to give. I hung up halfway through and before doing so told them to shove the 3rd member up their ar$e, no shlt. If you had heard the phone manner and "enthusiasm" you'd of done the same.

Not to be rude but 90% of the Americans I have talked to seem very rude.  :-[ They cut you off and won't let you say your piece. If you understand what they're saying and try to say, "Oh yeah, I know what you mean just like the old days..." they raise there voice and speak louder and faster until they have finished. Once they have finished, then and only then you may speak.  ::) The 10% are people like Dave, Lemonboy etc from this board who didn't do that, much. lol Maybe I'm just use to the Kiwi style phone manner which seems friendlier and less robotic.

Some people that call me, dont' know that I'm busy and just call because they aren't.  My hands are usually dirty and I'm under a car.  Get to the point people.

Service is service, these places have customer "support" centers.
5 minutes out of someones day isn't going to result in a project piece not being completed.

This isn't calling up someone like Chryco with annoying questions......customer service =  :eek4:

Bad service is bad for your name too.  I remember when I had Holley's Projection piece of JUNK fuel injection system.  The Tech support guys there didn't know JACK and couldn't help at all. I ended up getting into a little trouble because I took things into my own hands as far as trying to get satisfaction.  I ended up selling it on EBAY later. Poor customer service hurts your NAME more than you think.

Ah, how is that mate?  :clueless:
If it hurts my name with that company because I want what I pay for, then who gives a toss.

They can put up all the corny lines and "we'll put your right" slogans but if they're not going to stick to their word and I question this so be it if I "hurts my NAME".  ::) Doesn't hurt my name IMO and I'm actually not even sure I follow you.

Anyhow, anyone know of some good Ring & pinion company's?

Ha ha Carl,     I don't mean that it hurts OUR names with the companies, Who cares about that.  I mean it hurts the COMPANY's NAME to have all of us out there telling about our bad experiences to others who tell others, etc.

I know a local guy that sets up gears for me. I'm afraid that if we send you a diff, it might howl by the time that you get it.

Oh I see. It definitely hurts them when Forums get a hold of the bad service.  :iagree: It's so much better for these guys just to deal with the problem quick smart even if they have to loose $200+ whoop-de-shlt. lol If it means $1000 or bad publicity and a X against their brand name then they deserve all the bad rep they get.
