70 challenger + shaker?
« on: June 23, 2006 - 11:55:35 PM »
i gotta admit i'm curious as to how many 70 challengers were optioned with the shaker from the factory, if any.  i might have seen one, maybe two.  this is interesting to me because it seems like there were a ton more shaker cudas than challengers.  i guess you could say trivia is my thing, but i can't find this information.  someone help me out?  thanks in advance for humoring me.
One step at a time...

I heard that the early shakers (without crumple zones) would cut the drivers head off in a head-on (no pun intended) accident.

This didnt happen on 'cudas because they had a header panel.

Not sure how many were made, but I have only seven recorded in the registry so far.

The first Challenger I ever rode in was a 70 RT 440 sixpack with a shaker and it was in 1970! I always thought around 200 were made but don't know where I got that number.

:grinno: The shaker was on several cars, Mopar or not.

There is only one Bulge hood though. Can't beat those sexy lines.
The Shaker looks great on 'Cudas but on Challengers....Bulge has it beat!  :grinyes:

Shaker was standard on Hemicuda(another reason to see more of them) and optional on Challengers, I prefer Challengers w/o myself.

The early 70 Cuda's didn't have crumple zones either (Rallye or Shakers).  The later 70 Cuda's did, not sure when they changed over to the crumple zone hoods.

If I remember right it was 189 in 70 and 221 in 71.   Right around 2000 for Cudas for the 2 years, so in theory you will see 5 n96 Cudas to every n96 Challenger

I have to agree with NZ, the shaker just doesnt fit with the challenger lines.

Right..  I bet the crumple zones were added pretty early on  but a ton of 'CUDAs were built without them. A have a couple examples of both off of 1970s.
They are easy to spot because that's the only year the Plymouth emblem is in the grille and not on the hood so no emblem holes for 1970

For those who haven't known me thus far, I have a factory N96 shaker six pack '70 Challenger.

I know, the shaker image fits the Cuda's best, but I think after time, you realize the coolness of the shaker incorporated into the Challenger lines. My car was built on April 15, 1970, so safe to assume the crumple zone shaker hood was introduced then. However the same week my Challenger was built, a LOT of T/A's were built that week, so I'm wondering if the car was actually one of those N96 "replacement fresh air hood" cars whereas they fitted a T/A hood instead of the Shaker due to shortages/changeover of the crumple/no-crumple hood stampings....

From what I have gathered thus far, approximately 85 (and as high as 110) shaker 440 six packs in whatever tranny/rear axle/color were made for 1970. Galen has been taking a LONG time to get the Chrysler Registry docs/stats and other stuff I ordered to me (over 1 year now, he charged me already!) so I wonder what the hang up is.  :clueless: I understand if he is trying to get accurate information on something "pecuilar"....

An old quote....from a Mopar article by John Sloan:

>>>
Shaker production is as follows 340/383/426/440: Challenger R/T hardtop-164, Challenger R/T SE-15, Challenger R/T convertible-5.
>>>

I do see a lot more '71 shaker Challengers compared to '70, that point I agree on...

This would have been substituted with an N94 on the fender tag then, or not built at all you would think?

The Challenger shaker hood was revised and available again before the N94 hoods and T/As were available, so the whole "shaker hood shortage replaced with T/A hood" thing is nothing more than a myth.

The N94 hood was available on 340 and Challenger R/Ts as an option after they came available, very few non - T/As are known with them, only four so far for the 1970 models.
