Vibrating or rattling noise?????
« on: June 25, 2006 - 11:12:20 PM »
:pullinghair: Ok so ever since I put my gas tank back in my car dont know if this is related to it or not, When ever I am driving the car and I have the throttle pushed down it sounds like either the drive shaft is vibrating or the transmission is. I can try to record the sound next time I have the car out and am driving it but I amd wondering what could be making the sound. It is coming from closer to the firewall from what I can hear so maybe it could be something with the engine. Anyone :dunno: :clueless:

too many possibilities , could be wheels or driveshaft out of balance & possibly a bad trans mount or about 100 other things

Any other way you can describe it Ross?  :dunno: :clueless:

As Chryco said there could be many different possibilities.

I just confered with my dad as I pointed it out to him while I let him drive my car today. He says he thinks its something with the valves i think he called it a valve tappet or something like that from using cheap gas. :dunno:.. But back to the sound now that I think of it the sound has more of a knocking noise to it.. Its just all so confusing maybe I will take the car out again first thing in the morning when I wake up to re-think over the sound.

Could be that and how would I go about figuring if that is the cause of the noise?

Good question, Chryco will know. For starters you'll need to get into it.

May need some new lifters. Chryco?  :dunno:

if it is cheap gas it is pinging , it should happen when you floor at at low RPM , otherwise known as detonation which can distroy an engine
for the most part lifters are very reliable & will never make a sound unless they will not hold pressure at that point the pushrods will hit the rocker arm possibly bending it plus the valve will not open causing a misfire aswell

pinging can be stopped by using better fuel or retarding the timing slightly

to retard the timing you need to loosen the dist & rotate it very slightly [clockwise on a small block & counterclockwise on a big block ]

When you retard the timing the engine rpm should decrease. You may need to adjust your idle. Get a timing light too. If you advance it the rpm will increase. You can also throw a can of octane booster in which should counter act the cheap gas quickly.
