I dont have a timing light to work with right now... My little sister's friends grandpa is supposed to be giving me like a brand new one for free ... as far as changing the timing do I move the whole distribitor or just the cap? This part of working on the cars is all new to me.

There is one bolt that holds the distributor in place. It will be holding down a bracket that kind of surrounds the distributor shaft. Just loosen that bolt. Then grab on to the distributor cap, and turn it. That's it.

Make sure you plug wires are on tight before you start!  You can get quite a jolt don't ask me how I know.

Sounds so simple... I will go do that in a lil bit and take the car for a spin after re-adjustin the carb for the idle and let everyone know how it goes with the knocking sound... and I will make sure about the plug wires lol dont need my hair standing on end

One more quick question for adjusting the timing car on or off? I know it may sound like a stupid question but yet again never have messed with the timing before.

ON  You also need to make sure the engine is warmed up and the vacuum advance is disconnected and plugged before you start  You should be using a dial back light if possible as it will make it easier to check..  The factory marks prob only go to 10 deg each way  A factory manual makes this easy to understand

No question is dumb if you need the answer

 :iagree:

When the car is running, you will hear a difference in idle as you rotate the distributor cap back and forth. Ultimately, you want to have it where it is happiest(idling highest), but if you have a pinging problem, you need to retard it a few degrees. That's what I had to do.  >:(

Went to go check the timing with the timing light that was given to me which looks to be older than my car :swear:. Hooked it all up and the light doesnt even work so I am thinking about going out and buying my own timing light... Well turns out it has nothing to do with knocking or anything in fact its actualy my carb backfiring multiple times in a row when it gets past 3k RPM. and when driving it backfires threw the carb at lower RPM's. What could be causing it to backfire? :villagers:

if you disconnect the vacuum advance to set timing I do not recommend re-connecting it or the timing will be way off again

I never disconected it as the timing light didnt work :hyper: when I hooked it up so I wasnt going to mess with anything on it. But my friend helped me figure out that it was backfiring this whole time and not something rattling.

You running 87/low octane? Go grab some 91/93 and toss it in the mix. Mine pings off our crappy summer mix 91 so i mix about 40/60 of 100octane in there to keep it happy. I could de-tune it like what your looking to do...but thats no fun  :naughty:. If the timing light you have isn't working and your running cheap and low octane gas. Run to like Shell or 76 and fill what you can with high octane and see what she does  :dunno:

Thanks Goody but I am running the highest octane gas from Arco... Maybe thats not good enough I guess I can always try Shell or something just hopefully it stops backfiring out the carb....

Backfiring is definately an issue. Get ahold of a timing light, hell i use a harbor freight one and it works side by side to my buddys more expensive one. Find out the timing, also check the plugs and see how they look. Secondaires opening on the carb? Choke hooked up/functioning?
