Strange "thump" from my front suspension...
« on: June 30, 2006 - 03:03:36 PM »
It just started today, and it ONLY happens when I accelerate from a stop.  It sounds like it's coming from the drivers front wheel well, but I can't see anything out of place...

Oh joy.

How hard is it to replace?

Verify it first. Raise the hood ,torque the engine in low gear( carefully) and have someone watch the mount. They are not too hard to change.

By torque, you mean put the engine into first gear, and lightly hit the gas, while holding the brake?

Oh yea, it's definatly a broken motor mount.

Question:  Would any A body smallblock mount work, or does it have to be from 67-69?

I do not think the year matters? It has to be one for a 273 or 318 though, if I remember right the 340 / 360 mounts are different? NAPA or Pep Boys should have them.

If they did not have one in stock, they should be able to get it from their central warehouse in a day or two. If no one comes up with it first I will call the one here and get you a part number.

Got one.

Now, what all would be involved in changing it out?  Do I have to pull the engine?

Put a block of wood on a floor jack.   Then use the jack to raise the engine. I would use a 2X6.   This will give you a large enough surface to distribute weight and not dent the oil pan. Don't go too far.  Raise it only slightly. You can the remove the mount from the motor and the frame and replace it.  bolt the new mount to the engine then lower the engine and bolt the new mount to the frame.
