I noticed in a previous thread the # is different for the 71-72 heads and the 73.What is the differance between them?

Not sure if you're asking about BB or SB?  The BB heads around 71 72 and later increased the CC volume from 79.5 cc to 81.5 cc. The best thing to do is figure out what casting # head you're looking for and look it up. The valve sizes were all the same in the period you're asking about.

up to 67 the big block heads were 78 cc 68 & up wnet to an open chamber 88cc volume

Here is a link for some stats on the heads, including the cc volume and castings numbers. Its showing the 70 906 head at 79.5 cc and the 71 383 346 head at 79.5 cc. Maybe they screwed up...

Sorry.asking about a 340.I looked at the casting # website and didnt see any differance in valve sizes or volume.

As far as I show the early heads casting number 2531894 2.02 are 63cc and the TA heads 3418915 2.02 are 65cc. The 72 340 heads casting number 3418915 which are 1.88 intake size are 65cc and the 73 casting 3671587 are 65cc. The 360 heads are all 1.88 intake size and 65cc till 1977 when they went to 66cc.
