Valley pan ?
« on: July 01, 2006 - 07:58:35 AM »
first i have a question about a valley pan, can you reuse a valley pan? I also need a reccomendation on a good set of intake gaskets.  I have found the idle problem with my challenger and it seems to have an intake leak where the intake bolts on. the guy I got the car from has tried to seal an intake leak with lots of permatex and it didn,t work. I found the intake leak yesterday because of a split rubber fuel line. The car started idling real good and when I shut it off and looked to see what I had done to get it to idle right I saw a fuel leak dripping onto the intake right at the head, I fixed the leak and it went back to a rough idle.I found a loose piece of the permatex and I could move it about a 1/2 inch and the leak would pull it back to it. I have a mess of sealer to clean up. I dodged a bullet with the gas leak as it was only about 1 to 1 1/2 inches from the distributor.

Moderators, could you move this to engines and drivetrains. I placed it in the wrong thread. Thank you

I've seen somewhere on this site that people have reused them but why bother if you can get one for <20 bucks there  is obviously a sealing problem if someone used permatex!  You shouldn't have to  maybe someone cleaned up the deck and didn't adjust the intake to compensate?  I've used the factory bathtub gasket many time w/no probs  They also sell paper gaskets that sandwich the valley gasket if you need additional sealing.

Good Luck

I've used valley pans several times, mostly at the track, trying different manifolds/carb set ups. Since you're having a problem it would be best to get a new Fel-Pro set ( PN# 1214 )  that comes with the pan and two paper gaskets. Then use RTV sealer around the ports and on the bolt threads.

If you think you still have a problem, get it at a steady idle and set up a tach. Then use some propane around the intake or any other areas that could leak vacuum. You'll notice the RPM's increase from the fuel ( propane ) if you hit a leak spot. Don't forget to check vacuum lines to any other areas like brake boosters, cruise controls, climate controls.

Good Luck!

I have reused them but why not get the whole kit 1214 B engine or 1215 RB engine from FelPro, it comes with the valley pan , witht the heat crossover blocked & 4 side gaskets too

I just bought a Fel-Pro vally pan gasket from Summit, along with a intake manifold. It came complete with a small RTV tube for the front and the back of the gasket.  They are cheap, and you just need to slather some "gaskasinch" on both sides, and you are good to go.  Seriously, this is a cheap part shouldn't be causing you a problem.  :clueless: Why to re-use one?  :clueless:

Thanks guys, I'm not too up on the big blocks  as this is my first one other than the hemi I had in the 80's but was too afraid to work on it so I had a mechanic for such jobs. Thanks for the  fel-pro part # that is just what I was looking to get for my car.I always had small blocks and they were quite easy to work with. Sorry guys but I didn't realize that they were a replacement part like the intake gaskets. You all are the best and with your help I will get this challenger built for Carislile '07 yet.  :2thumbs: and then I have promised TheCudaGuy  :burnout:

I have ordered the valley pan and gasket set from Advance Auto and am picking them up this morning. They didn't have the Edelbrock gastasinch so I found an old favorite Indian Head gasket  shellac. I remember my dad used that stuff  and I hadn't seen any in years. I am going to work on the challenger today and will be taking a lot of pics from tearing it down to reinstalling the intake. A lot of before pics and a lot of installation pics.
