Here is how to tell between a big block and small block transmission.

Great reference and info TTMan.

That's something I'd love to be able to do is build stock to performance racing TorqueFlite transmissions.
There must only be about 5-10 guys who can build them properly down here in New Zealand.

How long did it take you to learn and was it through school or out in your garage over time?  :dunno:

I learned the basics in technical school but the "good" stuff you learn from experience and trial and error. I usually learn something about a transmission every day! I have been a Mopar man since the day I was born so I really have had an interest in Torqueflites since I have started working on transmissions about 21 years ago.

Good stuff, I want to learn. I may look into some kind of course or something.  :bananasmi

If I purchased an old 727 (locally) for cheap do you think it would be good practise to get it on a bench, buy a rebuild kit or shift kit and rebuild it with a book to try and teach myself? I don't have to use that trans, just practise.

YES!
The Torqueflite is the simplest three speed automatic out there.
Where you get into trouble with any transmission is if you need to replace a part because it is worn, what parts you can replace it with ( interchange year to year etc.)
They get a bad reputation for the low sprag but the low sprag is a weak spot in all three
(G.M. , Ford and Chrysler)

Thanks TTMan. I'll keep an eye out for a good rebuild-able 727.
If it looks good I may throw it on the 'Cuda once I "rebuild" it. lol

Look forward to asking you questions and learning a bit.

just curious why you seem to have them in storage without the pumps installed?at first look i thought they were completed units ready for delivery. but that obviously is not the case here.

They are good hot tanked cases ready to use if I need one. They are wrapped so they stay very clean on the shelf.
