'71 Challenger for sale w/ pics
« on: July 04, 2006 - 09:32:06 AM »
'71 Challenger, 318/auto, all original except for the (lame) wheels, this is a running, driving car with 52k on the odometer, may be original as the car has not been driven much in the last 15 years. Originally a South Dakota car and is fairly solid, the fender tag, vin tag, and door vin sticker are all still in place. The title is clear, the interior is very nice, great door panels, new carpet and headliner. Rear seat is excellent, original front seats were redone probably 20 years ago with velour inserts, now wearing seatcovers but still in pretty decent shape. Dash has some cracks, and the radio is missing. This is an A/C car and all of the A/C stuff is still there, even the belt on the compressor. The body needs work, the hood, roof, and trunk are all excellent, the fenders and doors are decent but will need work, as will the quarters, but I don't think it needs full quarters. The trunk drops are decent, the front and rear valances are also decent. Interior floors are very good, trunk floor is soft. The drivers front frame rail needs patching or to be replaced, however it is structurally solid and the car can be driven. I'm asking $7800, check out the photos and email me direct for more info at gto389@chorus.net or better yet call me at 608-213-7541, Thanks!

Welcome aboard here.

Not a bad car for the price. Looking at the dash gauges, was this a Grand-coupe? Did it have a vinyl roof originally?

Looks like it has 70 SE door panel carpet trim.  It also has a 73/74 rear valance.  It also looks like it has the front valance chrome trim which isn't seen to often.  The car has a lot of potential.

Good eye.

I didn't notice the later year rear valance. That front valance trim could be worth almost 1K if it is in mint shape. Yep, this car is definitely worth having.

Thanks, I have been looking around a bit and there is a wealth of great info here. Thanks for the positive words on the Challenger, I would love to see it restored. I am going to post a photo of the fender tag, I have decoded it on another Mopar site and have that info if someone wants to see it without having to look it up, I guess I didn't realize they made a Challenger Gran Coupe, I thought that was a Barracuda thing? I'm sure you guys know more about it than I do. It was a white vinyl top car, the roof is still suprisingly very nice. I also have the window trim and vinyl top trim, all pieces are in good shape and are included. I'm also adding a better photo of the door panels. I have plenty of other pics if anyone wants to see specific shots, let me know.

My 71 has the carpet on the door panels!  I think it was because it came with the H5xx option code of high price class bucket seats.( I see you have the H5xx code too) I also have a vinyl top and A46 moulding package which includes chrome on the doors. I see you also have that code too!! Oh BTW my car was basically a Plain Jane with a TON of options!! it is NOW an RT clone!!  :woohoo:
Here is a little tip that my "buddy" from chrysler gave me as far as reading a fender tag goes if you bought that car! take off the fender tag and read it from the backside!! the codes you can't read from the from because of the paint peeling off you can read them from the back!!  Good luck it looks like that is a really nice car!!

If that front valance chrome trim is a 2 piece, it is the high priced one. If it is a one piece, it is the 72-74 common piece.  My SE door panels came with the the "special edition" script on the inserts, along with the carpet and lower reflector. Looks like a good find for someone.

Hi guys, thanks for all of the tips, and positive words. It is going to need a complete restoration eventually but it is 98% complete and actually drives pretty well too. I'm going to give it a few more days here then I might go the ebay route with it.

PS. the valence trim is the 2 piece plus the small center piece in the very middle that bridges the 2 together.

Well, I took fresh pics and put it on ebay, I hope it is ok to post the link here, I didn't see any warnings against it. There is a Buy it Now and a lot more info and pics than I posted here, the buy it now on the auction is higher than what I had listed here, I will of course end the auction early if anyone from the board who has already seen it wants it for the price I originally posted here. Thanks again for the input and the space, I have my eye on another Challenger as well that is pretty rough but has a bunch of good parts, I will list that here after I get it home as well, either whole or parts depending on how it looks when it gets here. I like the atmosphere of the board and am not a big fan of ebay...... So here is my current link.

I have seen this car personally.  It starts up and runs just as described.  The description on eBay is pretty accurate and the pictures show the worst areas.  I am st ill thinking on this one....especially since it is local.
