Crush 'em all!!!

A move is afoot to bring in legislation to crush the cars of convicted street racers.  A lot of rice going to the landfills I hope! :violin:

Instead of crushing the cars, they could re-sell them at government auctions.

Seems like a huge waste of resources to crush the cars.

That could be a dangerous law if not worded correctly-if I punch the gas for a second in my car when ther eis another car near me they may call it "racing" and wanna crush my cuda.   :nono:

I agree, it could be pretty easy for a copper to say you were 'racing' instead of just cruising, or hoppin on the throttle. However, around here i seem to think the old muscle guys don't get tampered with too much. Hell, ive been running my cutouts open for a couple months now.  I think the ricers are in for it though  :villagers:

All the talk by the safety nazis seems to be focused on the riced up wannabe racers, and here in Vancouver in particular, the too-much-money BMW and Mercedes wannabe gangstas.

The reason that they are saying "crush them" is that they just want them off the street, not sold to some trash with tons of money, no brains and an anatomical deficiency. :naughty:

We have had a run of really horriffic street racing crashes here in the last few years, more often than not taking out some innocent driver or pedestrian.  Fines and things just don't work, (although we did deport two guys recently) so perhaps making them watch their pride and joy get squished will have some effect.  Particularily if it is combined with big fines, jail time and even deportation.  Who knows?

My  :2cents: :

I disagree on the idea of crushing good cars, never mind what brand they might be.
Instead, they could be stripped of go-fast goodies, and sold as-is on government auctions. That way, they could represent a higher income, than what i suspect the scrap metal would bring in, and resources would'nt be needlessly wasted.

Also, muscle cars could be victims of this thing. Anyone who believes there will be a difference in treatment for a guy caught racing in a 'Cuda?
To me, the idea of crushing cars just because they're used to something that's not approved of in the ruling class, it's damn close to book burning.

I concur. Among many, many run-ins with southern "Buford T Justice"-type law enforcement during my youth was one in which I was driving a parts car home while my friend drove my car. We had ended up beside one another at a stop light, and I yelled directions to him about where to go and told him to go ahead of me. He took off, no burnouts, pulled in front of me and the next thing I knew there were red lights everywhere. The cop swore that we were racing (how he determined this he was never required to explain), and amazingly identified my Challenger as a Corvette, even when it had been sitting beside an identical Challenger except for the paint color. Both cars were impounded, and the body of the parts car was severely damaged in the impound lot. If this kind of law had been in place then there would be two dead Challengers.

Same here, but i love to let them think they won and they race like hell and feel like a million bucks but then they just see that old Charger(my 69 goes like hell but looks like hell too) closing in fast in the rearviewmirror and they just race the **** out of that Bmw, i just spent some more bucks on gas but their Bmw is up for total resto after that

I wholeheartedly disagree with this bill. (And no, I don’t dig rice.) The entire concept of the government seizing private citizens’ property makes me shudder. Shades of KGB or Gestapo. So there is a big problem with street racers… raise fines, lengthen jail sentences, but by no means give the government more power.

Secondly, this proposal if made law would not punish law breakers evenly and would likely exceed the maximum permissible fines. What if a 1989 5.0 Mustang was racing a 2006 Corvette. One guy gets fined (in essence) $4000 and the other $40,000 for the same violation.

Finally, I agree with Goody: It would be far too easy for the coppers to claim that you were “racing” when you were just getting on it a little, and the cop was just in a vindictive mood. Taking it to court will do little. Cops lie. Judges side with them. Been there myself. Good thing that it is my brother and not myself that works for the US Post Office. They would have regretted it.

Anyway, here’s a refresher on the Bill of Rights:

Amendment V: No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a grand jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the militia, when in actual service in time of war or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offense to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.

I pretty much agree with what you've said, but the quote refers to imminent domain, i.e., "for public use." They wouldn't be seizing cars for public use, although they might claim it was for public good.

This is an even more basic issue, the right to have property in general. It also ties in with continually eroding freedoms, in that it seeks to punish people for what they're thinking, or what they might someday do, instead of what they do or have done.

Doing this would also result in more police chases, as people wouldnt stop if they knew they were about to lose their car.

Punish the driver not the car! They might hate to lose thier car but jail time would really deter them from street racing.Put those ricer boys in a cell with Big Bad Bubba for a couple months and it just might straighten them out. :smilielol: .It`s just like the gun advocates say,it`s not the gun but the person pulling the trigger.
