Link from Newb in NH
« on: July 05, 2006 - 05:53:09 AM »
Wow this is a great site! I posted a Newb Intro yesterday and got a bunch of responses! Thanks!

Here is a link to my site describing the Challenger resto. http://www.linric.com/challenger/Challenger.htm. I took all the pics at high res so it loads a little sloooow. Sorry about that. When I have a little more time I will remedy that situation.

More about the car specs...
'70 Challenger 383 Magnum 4 speed car - JS23N0B281284 bult in March '70. It is not numbers matching but we did find a 383 HP date coded 1/70 and had it rebuilt... .030 over, tweaked the cam just a bit, put TTI 1-3/4 inch headers on it and a Mopar high-rise single plane intake with an Edelbrock 750 carb. After about 3 hours on the dyno we saw 360hp at 5,000 rpm. (The high-rise intake with the stock air cleaner has about 1/2 inch clearance under the hood.)

Factory color was FK5 (Burnt Orange) and the previous owner changed it to a non-stock blue. Since it is not a numbers matching car it is now FJ5 (Sublime), and will have no vinyl roof, side R/T stripe and hood black-out. The  interior is black. It has repro 15" rally wheels from YearOne and Radial T/As.

Other upgrades include power front discs, urethane bushings and high performance exhaust from TTI. I read Tom Condran's book "Performance Handling for Classic MOPARS" (highly recommended) and decided to go with the offset upper control arm bushings to provide adequate caster for the radials (comments on this point?). I am also holding off on a rear sway bar until I see how it handles.

There are more descriptions on the web site and plenty of pics. The car is going into the paint booth on this Thursday for exterior paint prep with hope to do the painting on Monday. Then the exterior trim and interior installation and she's done! Maybe the end of next week.

Thanks for all your interest! See you on the road.  :burnout:

Jim

Looks like a great project and the color looks great. I would love to dyno my engine and see what we can get out of it.

There are more pictures accessable by clicking the pictures on the main screen. There is quite a bit of detail including a wav file of the engine on the dyno and a video clip with the engine running in the car.

Yes, the car was 2 tone when I purchased it. The previous owner bought it in '76 and did the paint, the shag carpet dash and a bunch of mods for racing on an 1/8 mile track in northern NH. I wanted to put it back to being pretty close to original with a few upgrades and a color change back to a stock color (but not the original color).

It is 1-2 weeks away from being finished and I can't sleep at night because of the excitement!  :jumping:
