1970 Challenger stock trailer hitch
« on: July 08, 2006 - 10:57:12 AM »
Hi I'm new to this forum stuff, but looking for info and it looked like some of you may have that info.

I have a 1970 Challenger SE, that I purchased in 1983.  I drove the car for many years and then began a fixing it up life got in the way and it got put in the garage for last 10 years.  Now we have decided that we would like to have a tow vehicle, and since the Challenger originally had the tow package installed we decided we would use that instead of buying some SUV (we drive sports cars normally).  Anyway we are looking for either a 1970 Challenger trailer hitch or pictures of one so that we can have one fabricated.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Tillie

Like he said, I still have mine in storage (I think). Not sure if I threw it away or not.
It wasn't a favorite item and was removed as soon as I had the chance.
Only plus about it was it weighed a good 40-50lbs so helped in the traction department.

These are the only photos I have of it and they're not very good.
It wasn't an item that I was wanting to remember, though, it was 10 times better than that wing.  :lol2:

Well I guess for the most part it would not have been the first thing that I would do with the car. By this car becoming our tow vehicle it means it will get driven once in a while.  For the last 9 years I have just had to see it sitting in the garage covered.  Now my husband has taken an interest in fixing it up so that we don't have to buy an SUV and by fixing the Challenger up we will have something in a couple years.

Thanks for pictures.  Yea the wing is pretty bad, but at least it is not a "Tom Servo(mystery science theater 3000)" wing like on all the little rice rockets.

So my car has all of the options that list has, I guess then thats what the extra holes probably were for.  Also it has a rear deck luggage rack, its a kinda unique car, also has the no small window option on the SE.

We did find a picture of what the original one looked like  :woohoo: and we will have the guy at the hitch place build one, I just wanted it to look like they did.  Even if it is not cool the car just has lots of weird options.

Thanks for all your input.

I had one like this with the first "U" bolting around the license plate to the bumper and the front "U" I welded to the 2 tie-down brackets that are bolted to the rear frame by the mufflers.   Around '87, I towed a race car and trailer to the Mopar Nationals in Columbus.  I had a 4-speed and 3:91 gears and it towed great.

We plan to pull either a set of jet-skis or a 16' hobie cat, whichever we find first I'm guessing at this point.  I guess there is the freak chance we would want to pull one of those little trailers for a set of tires for autocross.  :burnout: I'm not real sure about autocrossing in that big of a car, I'm used to a Porsche for that.  Once the hitch is added to the car -- possibly Friday I'll try to get some pictures to post.

why would you pull a trailer with a 70 SE? are you crazy?  Don't mean to be rude, but buy a SUV don't do that to your car.

I may trailer with my T/A later on, I gotta get the slicks to the track somehow.  :dogpile:

Not all cars belong on trailers, more fun to tow one than be one one.  ;)
