What would be a good price? The pictures don't show it, but its almost a complete car- minus carpet, door panels, headliner, and a few other small items. The reason I was unsure about the purchase is the amount of money that I sink into a 74 I will never get back if I ever needed to sell. Don't get me wrong, I have a son on the way and I look at it as many sunny weekends of going for a cruise in, and then passing it down on to him.

What about the whole vin ordeal?

Tough to give a price without viewing the car in person!  What are they asking??  I do think 1974 models are increasing in price every day!

What about the whole vin ordeal?

A missing VIN, it will be tough to resell the car if you're looking to recover the expenses you put into restoring it. States have duplicate VIN stickers, but will suffer a hit in value. Does the seller have a clean title on hand? If not (bill of sale only), you face the daunting task of re-titling through your DMV, and the subsequent VIN reassignment.

You can find the VIN on a sticker in the inside driver's door jamb, or on the radiator support or firewall/cowl near the driver's wiper shaft. Getting a broadcast sheet helps immensely, but looks like your car's been stripped already. The only place one COULD be is behind the glovebox lining, inside the front seats, or the rear package tray.

If you don't mind my asking...what is the seller asking for this '74? What is your budget for getting a "starter?"

If you can find out the VIN, post it here. There are several resources here you can do with the VIN: give you the original engine configuration, and see if a lost broadcast sheet for it has been submitted.

Best of luck, and remember, there WILL be others. Also www.moparts.com lists complete/project/parts cars, as well as the For Sale forum here.

 :iagree:

Try to get a title for the car from the current owner, then observe/find it on the car, VIN tag, Fender tag, Dash tag, Door Tag, Radiator Support, Firewall/Cowl). If a few of those match the clean title then you should be good to go.

No title? If not do some leg work and dig on the guy selling it, you might be able to track it down.

A VIN tag could be missing for a few different reasons;

The car was stolen and the thieves removed it.

The owner lost it.

Some one took the dash pad with VIN attached and used it and a bill of sale or title to re-number a different stolen car.

Lots of possibilities. Personally, I would avoid it, it is not worth any future hassles that may come up.

The last car I bought, a '74, like that had no front end and the engine was locked up but I paid $500 in 2003

I know that's kinda low but the guy had to get it gone and I needed the parts  (like always)

The cool thing about it is it did have the dash and all numbers matched..'cept the engine/trans  383/727

I don't think I would buy your deal for much more then that because of the headaches and possible legal problems down the road

I still got that chassis lying around somewhere...  A real 'CUDA rust free

If you look at the price of parts to make that thing roll it will likely come out more than you were wanting to spend anyway ,and it sounds like you want something you can drive asap.Don't let your excitement get you into a bad deal.My brother decided he wanted a challenger almost a year before he found what he was looking for.I don't know what the inflation has been in the past 4 years ,but I picked mine up for $6,400 because the guy wanted it to go to a good home more than making top dollar off a dealer. The deals are out there ,and what's a few months search for a car that will give you a lifetime of memories

Looks like a shell to me. By the time you add the motor, trans, interior, paint, etc....you'll have spent 30k easily. If you can afford to buy one a little more complete, you'll be ahead of the game. Take a look in Az. You'll have to hurry to get a decent one though as many are being bought up. I had a guy who said he worked with Foose come and look at mine, he decided it was too nice for their purpose. If they're coming to Az to look, you can bet Cali's pretty dried up about now.
