Hood lifts up and shakes at speed
« on: July 15, 2006 - 09:41:55 AM »
Hello Everyone,

My first post! looks like a good board indeed, ok so now my issue:

I have a 71 Challenger whos hood starts to lift up from the the drivers side edge and comes up a got 1-2 inches at 100+mph (it starts to eek up around 70ish)
also the front of the hood (where the latch is) shakes/vibrates rather quickly. I'm afaid this thing is gonna let go and thats gonna be ugly to say the least (i had hood smash let go a few years ago on an audi, it was bad)

So why does this hood rise up? hood springs weak? I though about adding those hood pin's allthough not correct for the car, its beat the alternative.
I also had to lift and loose to Rustang last night b/c the hood was comming up, now that reason to fix it right there!

Also the hood never sits right on the drivers side, its seems up a little, but this is minor to the hood lift & shake.

Pics attached..

Cheers!,
//Tom

Welcome to the board 1971Challenger, I believe your problem is not springs but worn pivots, my hood does the same thing all the time, I can push down on the rear to get it straight but soon as I open & close it the rear stays up, mine was caused by an accident which sprung the hinges.  :bigshades:

Hmm Interesting,

Yes, my hood does the exact same, when I come to a stop I can push it back down and it looks normal, and if I open/close the hood it sticks up, but again can push it back down where it stays until I get going on the highway.

What/where are the pivots? are you refering to the hood latch assby. where the hood springs connect and bolts to the hood? these dont look like I can do anything to them or can I?  Do I need new hood hinges?

Any idea about the front of the hood shaking at speed? I think this is amplified by the hood starting to raise and air getting under it and buffeting (sp?)

This one has me curious too ,every time I close my hood I push one side down and pull the other up.It'll stay put untill the next time I open/close it.Also ,when I pull the release on my hood it sticks ,and I push it back down and pull the release a second time and it opens right up.Sometimes a good "Fonzie" hit will open it the first time.

What I am calling pivots are the parts of the hinge where it articulates. I have seen a website for someone who rebuilds them, pretty expensive, I don't believe this is something we can do for ourselves. I have purchased a used pair in hopes that they will be OK for $100.00 I have seen a few go for less & more.
As far as the shaking there are some rubber pieces down the side of the fender that may be missing or the screw-in adjusters could just need raising.  :dunno:
Try running it on up to about 150 & see if the problem goes away!  :grinyes:

RAVAGE, I can't imagine why you would have one corner going down unless it is just out of adjustment. The hinges have slotted mounting holes that allow you to move it back & forth at the bottom or top or both, others here I'm sure have more experience & can probably tell you just what to do & hopefully that will fix the other side.  :clueless:

Mine does the same thing on the drivers side, it drives me nuts when I'm on the freeway. I'm going to go with hood pins, but I'd still like to get the hinges fixed.

Thanks, I will have to check them out.

Did you guys (or anyone?) put hood pins in b/c you though the hood might meet your windsheild? I hate to point them on b/c there are not correct not to mention drilling holes in my good Rally hood. But I'm worried it might let go.

Attached are the pics of my old audi that let go.

That was my main reason. I've seen some pretty bad photos of cars with hoods up against the windscreen.

Not pretty and for cheap it's a safe precaution.

Hi Tom,

I agree with other posts pointing to the hinge pins as the problem. I am at the final stages of a complete resto on my '70 Challenger. The hood would not sit correctly or even return to the same position without a lot of persuasion. I am using a shop that only does MOPAR muscle restorations. They sent the hinges out for a rebuild and now they are perfect. If you want the name of the hinge rebuild shop let me know.

Hi Jim,

your 70' is looking good!

Sure, if/when you get a chance I'll take the hinge rebuild place info..

Cheers,
