Removal of back seat.
« on: July 15, 2006 - 10:06:04 AM »
I have searched and searched but cannot find the magic spot.  How do I get the back seat of a 73 challenger out?

on either side at the bottom, about a forth of the way in, there is a hook pointing toward the rear of the car that catches a lateral piece on the seat. you have to push down and back on the on the seat, usually not that difficult but I had added old carpet padding under my seat & I could not get it to go down so I ended up using a hammer & flat screwdriver  ::)  hope yours comes out easyer

It's pretty easy to figure out if you lift the seat back section out first.

You have to have the top portion out 1st.  The top comes out when you remove two ½" bolts that you access throught the area where the top and bottom seat come together.
The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realize it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it.

I thought the bottom had to come out first since the top piece is supposed to be bolted in.

I don't know guys.  :clueless:  My top piece just slides into 2 brackets, or grooves, or whatever you want to call them. No bolts. That's not to say that this is how it's supposed to be since I have discovered a previous owner to be an idiot.  :stomp:

Mike those 2 pieces that you are sliding into the brackets get the 2 bolts that hold the seat back down. I think that you are putting the 2 inside the bracket instead of outside.
Like Cody said,  a 5/16-1/2" headed bolt keeps the seat back bolted to the floor, but most of us leave the bolts out to get to the trunk.

I have still had no luck getting this seat out.  Are there any other suggestions for me to consider?  I do not want to destroy the seat in the process.

Push back on the seat and then lift up, should come right out.

Yep, that's about it for the seat bottom. Push it back, and lift up from the back of it.

There is an opening at the bottom front of the seat bottom where it meats the floor pan. The seat has about a 6"wide by 1" high indntion that creates the opening. I can put my fingers in & touch the hooks that catch the metal of the seat, with a flashlight you sould be able to see. This is whers I hammerd mine loose.

The hook looks like this pic.  So looking at it, you have to push back, then pull up and forward.
