Engine stalls..any ideas??
« on: July 16, 2006 - 10:34:25 AM »
I'm rebuilding a 74 Challenger w/ 383, 727 trans, edelbrock RPM manifold, Edelbrock 750cfm electric choke carb.  Pretty much everything is new.  I'm finally to the point where I can pull it out of the garage.  But here is my problem:

Starts easy everytime.  When I press on the gas in gear, it stalls.  If I let it idle and put it in gear, it engages and moves.  But as soon as I press on the gas, it hesitates and dies out.  Is that a symtom of the carb requiring adjustment?  :pullinghair:

Oh, yeah, I can rev all day without a problem in Park.

Thanks.

Tim

Tim,

Has the engined been beefed up some? If so, and you still have a stock torque converter, that would cause this.

Mike,

Yeah, the 383 is bored .30 over.  The 727 trans was rebuilt with a shift kit and a deep oil pan.  I also put in a 2800 stall converter but it was used from ebay.

Could be the convertor.....

Tim,

The torque converter was the first place I jumped, because if it locks up too soon on the engine, then that's too much of a load too soon, and it will stall. I'm not saying you have a bad one, but maybe someone else will have another idea here.  We always like to blame the carbs. but I'm not sure here.  :clueless:

Tim,

It's me again.  :-[  If the torque converter works, then the stall speed should be plenty enough if not more. Now I'm on to the issue of the carb. getting enough fuel. I'm a Holley guy, but if you have someone step on the gas pedal, can you visually see the gas squirting down the throat of the carb.?

sounds like a possible vacuum leak or bad accelerator pump in the carb

Chryco,

Would a vacuum leak make it stall under load though??  I have a new carb, new intake and w/ new vacuum hoses, so there isn't much chance for air leaking out.

Even still, I'm still puzzled.  I'm currently leaning towards the torque converter but I'm not looking forward to dropping the tranny just to take a chance.

Any adjustments on the Edelbrock carb that could be causing it?

Thanks for the brainstorming...

I have NOT tried this, but it might help you. Start it up. Cover up the primaries. If it still runs, it is getting air from somewhere.

I think it is in the tuning at this point , try tightening the intake

All,

All bolts on the intake are tight.  I covered the primaries and the engine shut off.  So, now do you think its the carb or converter?  :clueless:

Thanks in advance.

Yep, there seems to be good spray from the jets.
