My 833 transmission in a 1970 Dodge Challenger 383 car is stuck between 3rd & 4th gear and I have a few questions I hope you can help me with, with some guidance I’m sure I can get this resolved. What position should the levers on the side of gear box be in when shifter is in neutral with linkage attached? The shifter does not feel like it is in neutral it does when you move it to left but not right.  I’m not sure if I have a transmission problem or a shifter problem or a little of both.

I got a rebuild kit for Z bar, but when I installed it using the only taped hole in the bell housing that the new stud bolt would go in, the Z bar is on a severe slope. The other two holes appear to be about ½ in. I’m guessing the hole I used is 9/16ths, all parts fit Z bar but don’t seem right on bell housing position. Are there #’s for identifying bell housing, if so where are they? What is the correct flywheel, how many teeth?

If I remove linkage from side of box what position will shifter arms be in for neutral on transmission? How can I tell if I have the right transmission, what are the #’s for a 1970 and where are they located?

Thanks in advance, forever MOPAR,
Jerry

WARNING.... THEAD HI JACK... (Sorry)

I too have a transmission problem.  Mine is stuck too, but in Park.  It's a floor shift and it will not come out of park.  Ther key is in it and turned on.  Any ideas?
The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realize it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it.

I had a similar problem with my transmission getting stuck in gear. The problem was that reverse and first would both get jammed in gear when I shifted into reverse. The car could still reverse but when I would try to get it out of reverse the shifter would become jammed...after this happening two times I noticed that the problem was a combination of the shifter rods being adjusted incorrectly and the shifter wasnt lined up when it was first installed. To fix the problem, look on the shifter mechanism and you should see a hole in the middle, next find a drill bit that is the size of the hole and stick it in to align the mechanism then all you have to do is adjust the shifting rods till they are the correct length. Also, to get the transmission unjammed all you have to do is find a large crescent wrench, put it on the jammed shifter levers, and pull till it becomes free. Hope that helps you....

383, take the linkage off all three shifter arms on the trans.  Center the top 2 by rotating back and forth, then finding the centers.  rotate the bottom(reverse) one towards the front. You should now be in neutral. See if you can get to neutral by rotating the driveshaft by hand with the rear tires up. See if you get there before putting you linkage back on.   If you can't find neutral, drain the case and pull the side cover.  The early style and late (ball&detent) style side covers, could be jammed and only pulling it off would let you see the mechanics of it.

Cody, (highjacker)  If your cars is complete and still has the tranny to column linkage, un hook it to see if you now can get out of park.  '70 only cars had a linkage rod on 4 speed and auto cars to rotate the column sleeve to allow the key to be removed. Yours may be jammed.
