porthole windows on a 74 cuda
« on: July 19, 2006 - 10:34:44 PM »
:clueless:Just got a 74 Cuda that has small oval windows installed in the C pillar. The man that owned the car said that he thought he had seen an article once that said some of these cars were built/created by Plymouth, possibly to alleviate the blind spot. I never heard of this but I did meet another fellow that says he remembers seeing cars like this around in the day. I decoded the fender tag but some of the codes came back as unknown. I realize that in the 70"s most anything went as far as car mods go but before I weld them over I thought I would ask. Any Ideas? :burnout:

The so-called opera windows (oval shape) or portholes (round shape) were a popular dealer add-on in the mid-70s.  It all started with the '72 Lincoln Continental Mark IV which offered opera windows in the C-pillar as an option.  They were so popular on the Mark that they were made standard in 1973.  Pretty soon knock-offs were showing up on everything. I've got to say though, I've never seen them on an E-body.  Any pictures?

If what I've been told ( by a 57 T-Bird owner) is correct, the portholes on late 50's T-Birds were supposed to be all dealer or aftermarket add-ons. They were so popular that there are few unmolested T-Bird tops around today. I can't back this up with fact but it sounds plausible. I've never heard of a factory port hole option anywhere on any E-bodys. Maybe this (port hole added) is what happened to this Cuda? It's just not as common as it was on the T-Birds obviously.

Would love to see pics!
1972 Dodge Challenger Rallye 340, AT, Code TB3=Super Blue, SBD=8/17/1971.  Yes, a Rallye without the fender louvers from the factory because of the body side molding option.

Several years ago, we had someone here post pics of one of their old cars with the side "portholes".  It looked interesting...wrong, but interesting.  I wish we had pics from that far back.

Thats either a dealer install, or aftermarket. Never came from Ma mopar like that.

Find a donor roof and fix em...that has to compromise the structural integrity of the C pillar.

IMO.... :puke:

That's a first!!!  :22yikes:

I have NEVER seen opera windows on an E-Body before.  :grinno: I can understand the function, but I'm not crazy with how it looks.  :clueless:
