wheels and tires 70 Challenger R/T
« on: July 25, 2006 - 02:44:51 PM »
Would anyone know what the correct backspacing is for a 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T wheel? I would like to try a set of forged aluminum wheels. And also what would be the correct width of wheel trac? And what size metric tire would be the same as the original 15 inch tire for a 70 Challenger R/T? If anyone knows, please reply. Thank You.

I believe the backspacing on any E-body would be 4.5 inches Max. Sorry I can't help you more.

Indian, the original 15 inch tires on the R/T's were F60-15's bias plys, and i believe the closest metric size is a 245-60-15. I do believe the 245's are a little bit bigger, and the 235's would be a little smaller. Being a radial tire, the sidewalls will be not as high as a bias ply tire. On some e-bodies, the 245's will rub the frame rail behind the tire at full lock on the front, and some won't. Seems to be hit or miss, I've had both happen to me.

MEK runner and Hemi 71, Thank you for the reply. I think I will give the 235's a try.

You shouldn't have any trouble. You can go a little taller in the back if you want.

Indian, you can fit 275's in the rear.

I have 245's up front, no trimming or anything needed.
I think 275 rear, and 245 front is about is far as you can go with stock 4.5 BS.

My tire dimensions:

Front: 245/60/15 on 4.5 BS 15x7" Rallyes
Rear: 275/60/15 on 4.5 BS 15x8" Rallyes
