Evans Engine Harness
« on: July 25, 2006 - 05:33:25 PM »
Okay I'm kind of stumped here. It appears to me that the harness I got from Evans has the wires color coded different for the car. I'm just wondering how the ballast resistor, the alternator, and coil is wired. This kit for a car that's being converted to a electronic ignition. In the wiring diagrams it doesn't have the ignition ecu listed and I know the wiring for the points and electronic ignition is different. Need some help.  :sly:

Sorry   :dunno:  I wish I could help.  I went with M& H http://www.wiringharness.com/ and they were the same color as the factory with the same connectors and very easy to put in.  They have electronic ignition too.

Someone on ehtis board will be able to help you.  There are a ton of smart members here and they have used evens beofre too.  I heard he makes quality stuff.  Good luck!   :2thumbs:
The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realize it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it.

The Evans harness only allows you to use a couple of ECU types out of the 5 or 6 available.  The YO allows for use of all the ECU's that are available.

These pictures may help.

Not sure which ones work and don't as I use the YO harness, but the Evans harness is 4 wires.  The YO harness is the full 5 wires and works with all of them.  Comforting to know if you need a ECU when you are a 100 miles or so from home on a Sunday.

Thanks again everyone. Just got this from Bill at Evans Wiring regarding the wiring:  The 70-71 harnesses are made to use the Mopar  electronic ignition and a 2 pin ballast resister that only uses 4 wires in the plug on 72 and later all 5 are used along with a 4 pin ballast resister There's my answer so I have to find an ecu to work with the harness.

Actually there was no electronic ignition systems in '70, they did not become available until late '71 and were 5 pin.   They 4 pin was a Mopar Performance piece that became available in the '80's.

That's why it won't work. I have a 4 pin Mopar ECU and the wiring probably requires a 5 pin. Boy, I wish he would tell people that before they drop money for an engine harness. Anyone know where I can find a 5 pin? :nono:

Don't know what to tell you, you bought the modified harness correct?  Like I said above I use only YO harnesses, everything is plug and play.  Yes they cost a little more, but they also work.  If you do happen to have a problem their technical support is the best in the business and will do whatever it takes to get a problem corrected.

Thanks Plum looks like I've already tried some of those things before I found out about the wiring. Looks like I'll just buy a wiring harness from Year One when I get the chance. Thank you.

all of the new boxes produced use the 4 pin type , the lower voltage on the 5 th pin is done internally with a resister inside instead of the external ballast resistor

I bought a new wiring harness for the headlights etc for my Charger from Bill. I had all kinds of electrical problems with it until I realised the wiring was put in upside down in the connector. After I pulled the connectors and installed them correctly everything was fine. Although it was kind of neet starting the car with the light switch but it would have been a bummer to hold the ignition switch on for the headlights. I phoned him about it. He didn't even apologise only said he would have to check other harnesses.
