Tachometers
« on: July 27, 2006 - 08:52:07 AM »
I'm a newbie so bear with me- why do some rallye dash have a tach that goes to 7 grand while others go to 8 grand? Are there production numbers available for both Cuda and Challengers?
Thanks for the help!
'70 Cuda Conv 340 4 spd Y1
'70 Roadrunner 440 + 6 Y1
'04 Dodge Ram 1500 Hemi

70 and 71 E-bodies had the 8K tach, while the later years had the 7K. Although it has been said a few leftover 8K tachs might have been put into 1972 cars. I can't help with your production numbers question, but I sure someone else will know.

8k tachs were mostly used in 70 , as with most parts the 70s were different

Both tachs are the same part number.  If you have a 7K you can get it refaced and calibrated to a 8K tach.  In addition, '70-71 rallye dashes are different than '72-74 in the location of the reset knobs.  Also the woodgrain is unique to '70's and the surround bezels are unique on the '70 Challenger as is the dash pad.

:iagree: My '72 has the 8K tach from the factory.  It was an early '72, made 8/17/71.

What production #s are you looking for?

All 'Cudas and Challengers from '70-74 or a particular year?
1972 Dodge Challenger Rallye 340, AT, Code TB3=Super Blue, SBD=8/17/1971.  Yes, a Rallye without the fender louvers from the factory because of the body side molding option.

I know there were more Challengers made for each year than Cuda's, but I don't remember where I saw the figures.   :banghead:  :banghead:  :banghead:

Thanks for the info. After asking about production numbers I remembered to look in my copy of Mr. Govier's "little white book" and found the numbers I was looking for.
