What a p*sser
« on: July 27, 2006 - 08:41:06 PM »
I had the Challenger in a 4th of July parade, ran real good, nice and cool. On the way home, I heard a light tapping noise coming from the engine; sounded like she was running a little low on oil, so I put in a quart. usually that'll take care of the noise. Not this time, though. Got her home without incident, had my buddy check it out while I was gone on vacation, sounded like rod knock to him. Took out the oil filter, brought it to the engine builder - turns out the oil filter internals basically collapsed, and released a bunch of crap back into the engine, according to the builder. The p*sser is that I just had the engine rebuilt last September, only has 1500 miles on it. Now I have to tear the engine  back out ( and just when I finally had it running so sweet), take it back to the builder ( who fortunately will warranty anything that needs to be done to it ), and go through the whole damn process again. The filter ? Was  Fram Superguard (?), something like that, anyway. That was the only part that the engine builder didn't put on, so I can't blame him for what happened. Like I say, I feel fortunate that he's warrantying everything, even though by rights he wouldn't need to. Anyway, my advice to all of you is to stay away from the Fram filters, and invest in something a little more heavy-duty, something that'll stand up to the high pressure oil pumps these big blocks like. I decided to go with the K & N oil filter - that appears to be seriously heavy duty. A bit pricey, but so what. I do not want to go through this crap again, believe me. But now I've got 3 weeks of not driving the Challenger, and summer's just starting to slip away. Sorry for the long post here, but I had to get this off my chest. Okay, I've vented, but I feel a little better now. Will keep you posted.

Sorry to hear about your engine.  As I was reading it I thought it's going to be a Fram Filter.... and BINGO!   :scared: Not the 1st time I've heard about a Fram giving up.

I've always used Mobil 1 Synthetic oil and Mobil 1 filters.  Doesn't get much better.
The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realize it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it.

Daaannng!  I've heard horror stories about fram filters and fortunately someone on the board saw a picture of our engine as we were building it and told us to yank the fram filter off before we ever even started the car.  Sorry to hear about the rebuild....you've got a great engine builder to warantee his engines, even against failures that aren't his fault!

Yessir, that sux for sure.   :swear:   :stomp:   :banghead:  Is there any recourse with the Fram folks?   :dunno:  Seems like if their product failed and can be shown to have caused the problem, then they should make it right for you.  If several have had similar problems, might be time to start an informational boycott until we get their attention...    :villagers:

That really is a bad deal. I can relate as my Cuda has not ran for a month since it spun a rod bearing with 721 miles on the fresh engine. I have not ran Fram filters for years as I had heard stories about them going south and causing all kinds of problems. Keep us posted and I'm glad to here the rebuilder will fix the engine at no cost to you as I put mine together so I'm footing the bill to get mine rebuilt.

I heard of product failure of some Fram filters first about a year ago, I'm wondering if it is the same filter (they do offer a few, right?) that has had this problem. I have used Fram filters and Penzoil oil most of  my adult car driving/owning life................never one problem. But then again that kind of problem is one you NEVER want to have either. On the other hand, an engine with just a few miles on the rebuild should not be "producing" particles into the system. Would not any filter if subjected to mental particles be doomed for malfunction? They can hold only so much debri, and my rebuilt engines at the first few minutes of start up put out about 70+# of pressure, then drop to about 60# after warm up. Thats a lot of pressure on an already possibly "overloaded" filter. Anyone understand my questions and thoughts. No negatives on the builder, but why should there be contaminates other than the usual found in the filter? Glad the guy is willing to make the repairs for free.

I had the same problem when I fist started my challengers engine for break in some 10 years ago, I was using standard fram filters and when I took it to 2000 rpm for initial run in both filters blew up like balloons. I still use fram but the HP1 racing filter or the heavy duty wix. Sorry to hear about your loss of the engine.
