SB or BB

my recently purchased 71 challenger has a 318 that lost oil pressure. so i'm forced to choose between replacing it w/ a later 80s 360 or a 440.  i know 360 can make some rediculous power but i've never had a bb car before so i figured this might be my chance. if i went w/ the sb would i ever regret it or want the torque of a bb.  the motor would be overhauld and upgraded.  so what is everyones thoughts.  anyone ever been in this situation? thanks for any input.

GO FOR IT, just know you will have to replace/alter just about eveything else.

If you go big block it might be nice to find a complete motor/tranny with all of the accessories and brackets, mounts, etc to simplify things.

It sounds like you want to go big block. You'll need a different radiator, engine mounts, and I'm sure a few other things. This is a common swap though.

That truck block is a 77 year 440. It might be a cast crank. Not that I would turn down a cast crank 440, but for the same build cost, I would try to find a steel crank. If I couldn't find one, I would 440Source a steel stroker crank.

That's my combination - 408 stroker - 460 hp and much lighter especially with the Eddy heads.

Most would go with a big block. If i was in that situation i probably would too. Figuring my situation im upgrading from a 318 to 360. Mostly because everything i have is ready for it. The rebuilt trans, rear, gearing is right, mity mounts, radiator, etc, etc. It would be a waste of some parts to put a bb in my car. I'll be closely copying a combo that turns 114mph in a 3400lb 'Cuda in the 1/4.  :grinyes: So either way you can make it fast, for now i like my small blocks. But it seems like you would have not much to loose to go to a Big block  :naughty: :2thumbs:
