I noticed that the one I just picked up has a deep trans, pan and I'm assuming that part of the reason is the need for more fluid.  To those who have them fitted, is that pan a problem for regular street driving? I was going to replace it with the stock 727 pan, but now I'm thinking that's maybe not such a good idea.
The deep pan is the same dimensions as the Mopar deep steel pan,the reason for it is to clear the thicker valve body. It should not have clearance issues.

Chris, the later ones have an even deeper pan because they added the governor pressure solenoid to the valve body.

I forgot to add that Superior makes an adjustable universal vacuum switch:
Note to purchasing: Ask for Superior part number K052

Useful for 700-R4, 200-4R's and other units working without computers and needing help getting lock-up in and out at the proper time.  Unlike the GM vacuum switch, this switch allows the vacuum trigger point to be adjusted between 1 to 6 inches of vacuum. This switch can also be wired-in to be normally open or closed.

Nice.  That variable unit looks like the one for me, depending on the price of course.   I'll likely keep it near the higher end of the scale so it drops off with less throttle, and therefore less likely to damage the trans.

Thanks for the info Terry.  I had an opportunity to get a rebuilt later model, 99 I think, pulled A518 for $300, but didn't because it was electronically controlled.  I wasn't sure I could control it with vacume and pressure switches, It was a 10 wire plug.  Its just as well, I guess, because I probably couldn't control it without the computer.

Thanks again Terry,

Chris

You did the right thing passing on the '99. I don't know about you ,but I don't want to get that involved with it hooking up the computer and all the sensors.

Well maybe, but it is a much stronger trans then the first generation A500 I got.  But it worked perfectly in the van I pulled it out of with 149K miles on it.  I just got my transgo shift kit.  I'll try to start installing it this week or next weekend.  It should be pretty easy with it out of the car.  It looks like the vans tranny crossmember will work really in the challenger.  I've haven't mocked it up yet so there maybe some issues I haven't seen yet, but we'll see.

I got the tbi motor cleaned and detailed, just need to get the center sump oil pan on and paint it and she'll be ready to stab in the car.

Great job Dogg,

It cleaned up real nice.  I hope you got the wiring plug for the LU OD, I didn't see it in the picture.  If not, I'd think about swinging back by and getting it before its crushed.

I sure wish we had a pick n pull in Austin.  Theres one on the south side of San Antonio, but thats a good 1.5 hr drive.

Do you have the slapstick shifter?  I guess you won't be installing it any time soon right.   Is that the car in pieces behind the trans?

Let us know how it goes.

Good score Rob, you've been looking for a decent one for ages. Looks like you found it.
It came up well in the last photo mate, good effort. As Chris asked, are you going to try and run the slap stik?

Those look like some nice projects Rob.  Let me know what you find as far as good period looking buckets.  I'm looking for some too.

I like Fiero seats, and found a guy that has some for sale, but haven't committed on them.

Hey Rob,
That was a great deal on the 518.  :2thumbs:  Good luck with the vert.

I have a couple of U-Pull-Its in Georgia, but everytime I go, all of the good stuff has been pulled.  Oh, well.

I get all of my electronics from DigiKey.com

I've been planning the swap out my self. I don't know how much that adjustable switch is but Digikey has 2", 4" and 9" vacuum switches for $23.00 and pressure switches up to 60 psi here.

http://dkc3.digikey.com/PDF/T072/P2105.pdf

For a stock Cam, the 9 incher is probably a good lock-up release pressure.

I agree with the 9 in vacume for kickout, but it looks like those pressure switches are for air pressure not hot oil pressure switches.  Although they do look the same.

Although these look like a nifty setup.

I need to find a distributor for these and check costs. Here is another source, but I don't really know which one of these we'd need.  The prices look good though.

http://www.bulkpart.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=2&Category_Code=4L60-700R4solenoid

Theres a kit at the bottom with what looks like the correct switch, but we don't need the whole kit.
I like the idea of a variable switch, but I bet they'd be pricey.

If anyone finds a good cheap source for these switches, please let me know.

Thanks
Chris

This is the kit Painless Wiring makes for a GM 700R4. I wish they made one for a 518, but I have never seen one. :dunno:
