ROB, YOU ARE THE MAN!!!!!

That is a sweet setup.  Just think, you are the first person to prove that it can be done.

One question: I know yow are doing this with an A518, should it be the same for the A500?

The OD section/housing on a 500 is the same as a 518.

If you go to Topeka you could save on the shipping of some shifter rods :o
I live in Gardner KS and will be in Topeka on the 9th.

I could let you tune my 6.1 also   :scared:

Okay,  It's done.  It shifts perfect because it is using the stock arm.  When I bought the junk yard 518, I took the little bracket in the pic.  I cut it at the bend, cut it to length, then welded it back together to hold the bottom of the rod. I bent the bracket a little to hold the rod at a 90 degree angle.  I haven't decided to keep the 518 or convert it to a 4 speed yet, but I now know it can be done.    The speedometer nut can be mated up by grinding the corner a little. I don't see what the big deal was all about.

Rob
That's cool! The big deal is that no one was determined enough to make it happen.

looks like my co-pilot (son) has to be back at Mizzou by Monday morning, which is Topeka day. We'll probably drive home Sunday Night from Springfield MO. I can't see spending any more on gas when I need parts for my 2 projects.

Rob

ok thats cool I understand the gas deal and needing parts. Thats why I am only doing Topeka (gas prices and my car is not ready)
What will you be driving?

Are you going LU or NLU? NLU's are very hard to find.

i'm trying for a nlu for the reason of going with a higher stall but my tranny guy seems to think you can custom build a lockup to get what i want, i also talked to another guy and he says you can use a nlu converter in a lu tranny. the guy thats going to do the work is going to tune into this thread sometime soon.
i'm worried about going to high on a stall, since i do lots of bracket racing i would like to be in the 3000 range but when i hit the highway i'm going to be slipping arn't i?
with 411's and 28'' tires can anyone tell me what my rpm would be at 60 to 70 mph with a nlu?

A non lock up and lock up will NOT interchange, the spline count for the input shaft is different. I have a NLU that it took me 2 years to find for a core. I wanted a NLU so I can go to a like a 4500 stall if I want to. I have not seen high stall LU converters, nor would I trust a LU converter for a car going to the track on a regular basis. The internals are weaker due to having to save room for the LU clutch.

With 4.11 gears you would be fine with a 3000 stall.

I did some surgery to fit my 618 on my car over the weekend - http://www.cuda-challenger.com/cc/index.php?topic=37642.msg462502#msg462502

I've seen the 500 in the junk yard but passed them up because I was hunting 518s.  The smaller size "should" make it easier for you to do the same thing.  You'll probably have an easier time with the speedometer too.  With gas prices the way they are now, I would put in the lock-up style converter 500, if that is the one that you have in storage. (3 pin connector).

Rob

Yep, the 500 lock-up is the one I have in storage.  Now I have to find a local transmission guy that will go through my 500 for a decent price.

One more question; Since I am using a stock 318 converter in my Challenger, should I be able to use one of the cheaper converters that Mopar offered for the Dakota, like one of these:

lock up performance econo converters for 904
4529403AB  68-92 904/a500 1900-2100 stall  249.00
5007290AB  68-92 904/a500 2250-2350 stall  239.95
P5007291AB  1993–96 A-904 1900-2100 Stall  239.95
P5007292AB  1993–96 A-904 2250-2350 stall  249.95

Also any clue what is the difference between the years?

The OD section/housing on a 500 is the same as a 518.

Thanks  :2thumbs:
