Thanks for the info Tactransman,I'm thinking of using a 518 in a future 6.1 hemi project.I've rebuilt so many 727's thru the years,and they seem to hold up to big HP,I'm hoping the 518 will do the same.The electronics seem to be too sofisticated on the new hemi 5 speed,for the engine management  I'm running.

I'd like to hear of some success stories w/the grinded case as I'd rather do this route than the hack x-member.

I have yet to see a picture of a 518 e-body install (in the car) where the transmission tunnel was not modified.The overdrive section housing is alot bigger than a 727. In my opinion, you will have to modify the floor tunnel /crossmember no matter what. Grinding the case is mostly to get the "slap stick" linkage to work. :thumbsup:

Close clearance , but it looks like it might work.
I just wonder how much movement will happen when the car is torqued?

Good reading guys.....I'm still looking at getting the 'Cuda an A518 trans when money allows......
But, first I want to see how the 360hp engine with 3.23 gears and a worked TF-727 go together.

"Hopefully" it's enough to keep me happy but that extra gear is mighty tempting. :hyper:


For those interested here's how my Gear Vendors looks under the car, tight fit with the X-Pipe but safe.

Pretty funny, the carved up tranny case pictures I took five years ago have circulated around & found there way here months before I did.. :smilielol: Terry, you posted you have concerns about the removed webbing, by now I'm sure you've taken a better look at that area of the case & hopefully feel as I do that it is far enough back that it isn't a problem, the car has been on the road for over four years, before I gave it back to the owner I beat it pretty hard with no ill effects, he's been driving it hard ever since including a road trip for california to Texas...BTW it has 4.30 gears, a lockup convertor, 618 internals, an E headed 340 dynoed at 452 hp, the tranny is tucked in far enough to maintain the original driveline angle, the O/D shift & Lock up are both controlled automatically by a combination of vacuum switches, a VSS, & some basic electronic circutry I designed...The car is originally a column shift so I didn't have to change a thing, kickdown linkage & shift linkage both bolted right up...On a slapstick, you keep the original shifter but convert it to a cable shift, eliminate all the linkage, fabricate a cable mount a little time working out the leverage points & voila your shifting... The tranny tunnel was left completely stock,   The first thing I did was take a measurment of the distance from the center of the original trans. output shaft to the floor pan for referance later, then I bolted the trans to the engine & attemptted to raise it , I trimmed the interferance areas on the trans., then when the output shaft to floor pan measurment was correct, I fabricated a new mount out of cardboard, then used that as a template to make a steel one.

Did anybody ever turn up pics of brackets modified/built to allow a Slap Stik to work with a 518?

Boy! - what a lot of transmission info here. and good stuff too.

Carl- when I was back in the old country last year I noticed the roads were jammed. Not much room to run anymore. Two suggestions here -
1. Run the stock tranny, use 3.91 gears and keep the engine balanced. You can run, race or cruise at slightly higher engine speeds but that won't hurt. My son runs 440/7.27/3.91 gears and gets around ok in his Charger... and it takes off like a rocket.
2. See if there is an extra low 1st planetary available, use a looser TC and run the 3.23s. Good launch and great cruising. Still takes off good.

Both of these suggestions are low $$$$$ options and can be homegrown in your back yard save for the purchasing and shipping of a low gear planetary (minor $$ compared to what the alternatives are). I took a 84 Z28 back to NZ 23 yeas ago and that had 2.94 gears, B&M T350 with low 1st gear, wavy clutches, 81 Z28 TC and 305 engine modified. Would bury you in the seat on takeoff, cruise @ 110MPH and topped at 145MPH. Brakes were useless though.

Good luck sorting through the confusion.

I'm guessing ChallengerHK's name is Carl too? I think it is but just making double sure. :cheers:
I've decided to go Manual/Hemi. Still, nice to know how you put a A518 into our E-Bodies with factory linkage.
