You are taking me back a few decades here, but it is used in this case as something to smooth out the voltage to those smaller gauges.

Please tell me you are NOT going to try and go without one.  :scared: It's there for a reason. Your readings will never be true. If you are in serious need of one, I have an extra.

It could... but I would check grounds before replacing parts.

no, im not going without. what part do I ask for when I go to the parts store. mine is hooked up still but not sure that it is working. when I put it all back together the first 3 times of running the car the guages just went up and down all the time (all the way up then all the way down). Now the temp guage slightly moves on the C, the oil guage reads correct sometimes and low other times, the fuel guage reads 1/2 tank when I fill up all the way. I just want these things to start working correctly. Does anyone have the scamatic for the dash wiring. No A/C, one speaker, Rallye dash. Maybe I can chase down some issues.

Like drawing #2 above shows, it's a voltage limiter for the gauges and yes they do go bad and display the symptoms you described. I had to replace one in my 71 Duster.

solution to voltage limiter problems

The condenser I believe is to cut down on radio interference, basically a noise suppressor.

anyone have anymore ideas. the guages are not fluctuating while the car is running. the only fluctuation is the oil guage and that is from each time that the car is started it ends up in a different location. It does move when I come to a stop it will drop  then when i move it will go up. I just want the fuel guage to go to full when I fill up instead of half a tank and for the temp guage to move off of the C and the Oil guage to read where it is suppoesed to everytime. I know this seems like a lot of wants but I find it very reasonable. Please help. If you know where the grounds are so that I can check them please let me know this as well.
