Do I have the wrong tranny in my car?

Is it just me, or does my shifter seem unusually far forward?

It's missing the hump and boot, so I know that would make it look a bit different, but still... I'm thinking my shifter is about 6 inches forward of where it should be.

Ugh.

That is not an E-body shifter handle, but rather a B-body pistol grip. I cant really tell if the hole is in the right place from the picture, but from what I see it doesnt look correct. You need to jack up the car and see where the shifter mechanism is mounted to, if it is a correct E-body transmission then the tailshaft should have two mounting pads on it....if it doesnt than you have a pre-70 B-body transmission and you will need to find a 70 or later B/E-bod tailshaft or the correct transmission. If you take some pictures of the transmission from under the car, I will be able to tell you for sure......but as it stands you definately have the wrong shifter handle, possibly the wrong shifter mechanism/rods, and maybe even the wrong transmission.

I knew something was rotten. I was reachin' for 1st and 3rd. :-)

Well, I think I at least have the correct tranny...

Found this pic of the differences between the B/E and A/F versions of the 833A

Mine seems to be the B/E. No?


Now that I look at it again, I'm thinking that I do indeed have the correct tranny but the idiots that did the conversion originaly used the B-Body shifter mounting point instead of the E-Body position further back.

Looks like you have the correct transmission and like that picture says, the rear is where the shifter mounts on E-bods. At the very least you will need the correct linkages and handle to correct everything. I am not sure but you might also need the shifting mechanism and mounting hardware, maybe someone else here will know? I also noticed that your tailshaft is missing the dustboot at the rear of it, not a big problem but if you are going to be under the car fixing the shifter then you probably should take care of that too. I bet you are doing this right now :pullinghair: but when everything is said and done you will be banging gears how they are soppose to be banged :burnout:

Already have the Mopar booted rear seal, by-the-way. Just have to get the thing in there.

AT least you have the later version of the B/E body trans
you will need a shifter mounting block available in cast or Billet from Passon or cast from Brewers , you will also need new shift rods , you can use the same shifter you have but I assume you will want the short pistol grip handle , You will need a floor tunnel too

It sounds like the biggest pain will be repairing the clusterf*** that is currently my transmission tunnel.

I really don't understand how people can half-ass something like that. For $200 in parts they could have gotten it right the 1st time. Well, at least closer to right.

What kind of shape is your shift lever in? I've got an E body pistol grip lever that's in pretty good shape, and might be interested in swapping with you.

That would be great as that seems to be the most expensive part I need to get me straightened out. Well, if you don't count cutting/welding time as an expense. :-)

Not having seen many original levers, I'd say it's in good unrestored condition. The hurst lever itself looks pretty nice. May have a little light pitting on it, but I'm not sure. It may just clean up.

The shifter handle itself looks decent. The "wood" looks pretty light and washed out. More yellow than brown, although other B-Body shifters I've seen look about the same. The upper bezel has a few dings in it and the 4-speed pattern button on top could use replacing. Par for the course on a 33+ year old piece, I suppose.

I'll take a closer look at it when I get home this afternoon and let you know.
