A WIW just in case it is what it suppost to be.
« on: August 01, 2006 - 05:34:34 PM »
I got a call last night from a former co-worker that spotted this car.  So he got the owners phone number for me.  :2thumbs: I call the owner of the car only knowing he was suppost to have some sort of 70 Dodge 2 door.  Well it is suppost to be a 70 Challenger 340 (said to be an R/T) with console auto.  The car is burnt orange with black interior.   Now has a 400 that has been sitting for a couple of years.   It is suppost to be all there but taken apart (grille, bumpers, taillights, door handles, marker lights are all out of the car).     The trunk floor and floor pans are said to be in good shape but once again I haven't seen the car with my own eyes.   I talked to the owner for quite some time but he said he doesn't have a digital camera or internet.  So I might make a road trip to check it out.  When I asked about the car he said it has a raised hood so I described the R/T hood and he said yes it has that one.  (P.S. When he first described the "raised center hood" I was thinking SHAKER :22yikes::lol: After talking to man about the car he said he has never thought about selling it but he would entertain an offer.  So I am trying to decide on maybe making a ballpark offer before I make the road trip.   I would hate to drive all the way up there (about 4 hours one way) only to find out he wants 15-20k for the car.

Really, at this point, who knows what he wants?  :dunno: If he doesn't know what he has, it might go cheap. It would help a TON if he could send you some pics.  :grinyes: I don't know what to tell you. this could be a car worth BIG $$$.

EDIT- If it is a 70 Chally, it wouldn't have been a 340 if it were an R/T. Only big blocks in 70.

Hard to say for sure without photos. Can you ask him to read the fender tag off to you over the phone? That would give us an idea of what options it came with at least.

Best of luck,

That is why I put (said to be an R/T car) the way I did.  When he said the car was a 340 car I asked about if it still had a  340.  He replied that it was changed to a 400 several years ago.  I asked about the grill and what shape it was in.  That is when he told me that the grill and all that was off the car but he said "It still has the emblem attached to the grill".  So I asked what the emblem was and he said "R/T".   So it might be a 383 car.   :dunno:

I thought about that.  But then again I afraid that if he starts trying to fiqure out why I would need the codes he might find out he has more car than I can afford.   :walkaway:  I know some will think I am terrible for doing that.  But if I can buy the car I want to.  I don't want to tip my hand to early.

Sure, it could be a 383, or 440 car... BUT it could be a 340 car that someone put the R/T badging on. Again, a pic, or fender tag would solve this.  :2thumbs:

So is a 340 more valuable than a 383 car??  I know 340 cars are pretty sought after and 383 cars tend to get changed to 440's.  So in E-bodies which would make it worth more the factory 340 car or a 383??

Depends on what you are talking about, if you are talking about N-code 383s vs H-code 340s then there is a price difference. The difference in 340 and 383 in a Cuda isnt that bad because Cudas came with 340s. However, on 70 Challengers the difference is substantial because the 383-4 car will be an R/T with all the R/T goodies (hood, valance, suspension, interior) while the 340 car would just be a regular challenger unless the original owner opted for some of the R/T options.

Well, the 340 cars used the same hood and valance as the R/T, so that part is a wash. Personally, I prefer less brightwork, so if I had a choice I would take the 340 car any day over one with the extra badging.

But then I like green, column shift bench seat cars too.

I was just doing some research on  :ebay: and there some of those make me want to  :clueless:.

Some big block Challenger project cars are going for very little and seem to be rare.  I thought most any 340-380-440 Challenger was going well over 8k.  But it looks like some hi impact cars are even selling for less than that.  So this is what I am thinking after looking around a bit.

If the car is a 340 car and is a major project around 3-5k
If it is  a 340 car that runs (non #'s of course) 5-6k
383 major project 6500-8500
383 car that runs around 9-10k??

That is going on the guy saying that the car is complete, just taken apart.  He said he and his son were planning to paint the car and never got that far.

What do you all think??

Before I did the research I was thinking around 8500 for a 340 project car?? And all the way to around 12k if the car is a 383 that runs??  But it looks like prices have come down ? ? ? ? ? :dunno:

If I end up trying to buy the Challenger, my Dart, Duster and my 93Ram will have to go to help with the purchase price.  But I think the Challenger will be well worth the trade off.  :clapping:

if the guy couldnt tell you what he has, thinks ita a 340rt car, and doesnt know if it runs. you can bet he has no idea that its worth 3-5g any day of the week if its a complete car thats not a basket case. by offering him over 2g your likely to shock the heck out of him and he may go digging for more info and chasing #s ect. i would look it over an tell him its alot like one that your dad had or some bs so youd give 2g just to have it for sentamental reasons..yeah its BS , but the same BS that some flippers guna give him next month if you dont buy it now.

Don't know what the car is worth, but I would never make 1st offer in this situation.  Hard to believe, but it has always worked for me, just ask "What's the lowest you would consider taking?"

You would be surprised, most people will come back with a number that's lower than you would expect.

Good luck

:iagree: Your best bet is to get the owner to come up with the first number.  That said, given that it's apart and probably not running, I would not go over 6 grand regarless of 340 or 383 car unless it's pristine but apart.
