Paranoid?
« on: August 02, 2006 - 08:08:08 AM »
So, last night I was out doing body work on the 71 Barracuda and, like every time I have been working on the car, people would stop by that are walking down my alley to check out the progress.  Usually it is always the same 7 or 8 people.  For the most part I don't mind.  Well, last night I had about three guys looking over the fence from the Taco Bell parking lot behind my house checking everything out.  One guy was in his late 40's early 50's and the other two looked like early 20's.  The older guy started to ask questions, "What year?", "Gonna put a Hemi in it?", etc...  Typical questions.  Then I start getting paranoid because of some recent stories about people having thier cars stolen that I have read.  The guy really didn't do anything to make me suspicious but at that point I kind of danced around the questions and took a mental picture of the guy.  Now I am starting to wonder if I am going to be doing that with everyone that shows interest in the car!  Does anyone else feel this way?  Am I justified?  Should I be doing this?  ???  :pullinghair:

It just seems like it is becoming harder to trust people.  Harder to be like the old days when car guys just hung out and talked cars with anyone and everyone.

Not unusual at all, kind of like when your little girl goes out on that first date  :scared: But unfortunately the people (thankfully not most of them) of our society have proven they can do most anything to spoil anothers dreams, work, and fullfilment in life. But they again just may have been genuinely impressed with the car and like most of us took what ever measures needed to get a peak, even looking over fences. Sure you have concerns, she's your baby, she's become a part of you. I understand fully.

You're not alone HemiDog.  I know Red has had the same paranoid feelings...especially when people take pictures of our license plate.  We've started parking cars in front of the garage that holds the challenger.  Now they would have to play musical cars to get it out.

:iagree: Not wanting to put people in catorgories, but most of that kind of activity I feel is due to the drug culture in todays society. People (not just kids) breaking into cars trying to find anything to sell or trade for drugs. A couple months ago a 23 year old guy punches out an 82 year old woman for her purse, this happens in the middle of the afternoon at the local WalMart. The guy gets away (nice spectators) but is found later. So, he gives "granma" a black eye, a busted lip, and a head wound when she falls to the pavement..............for something like $22.00..........so, as he tells police, so he could get some more pills. Sad testimony of this generation, some of them just need to be taken out behind the "shed" and given a good "@sswhippen", vigilanty justice may not be "justice" but it sure as hell get's it's point across.  :villagers:  :stirpot:

Not paranoid, just using common sense.  I, like Rev & Red leave the Beast in the garage with 2 vehicles parked in front of the door.  Not that it couldn't be taken, but it would take a lot of work and a lot of time.  All the while my nosy neighbors would have the police there fairly quickly.  I also have "special coverage" policy.  It is the .44 Mag rider policy.  While extreme, it works!     :cooldancing:

I shouldn't be that way, but while I was working on my Cuda I had the door open half way and you could see the taillights panel from the street. I park the truck right behind it always.
Well a red truck, (Ford I think) keeped driving back and forth up and down my street. He had bad visibility because he had a shell in back.
I counted 7 times before I closed the door.

So I have it too.

Paranoid   NO  Realistic   YES  Do yourself a favor hire a qualified Electrician to install DVR Video system for your back-up security  You can get them set up on the net and check your baby from anywhere in the world  a couple of cameras and a DVR w/internet connection could be had for <750.00.  Just my  :2cents: and yes I am an Electrician but don't live near you.  Make sure your state requires some sort of Background check for installers though as you wouldn't want a shady person :aarg: install your system.

I have a long driveway  @190' but some neighbors are really nosy(old) they keep an eye ALL the time PITA but I still feel safer knowing it's all being recorded 24/7.  The sign in my driveway gives them fair warning!

Nope, don't think you're paranoid.   It's just a sign of the times.

Some people in todays society just don't give a hoot about other peoples property, personal space, or even just common courtesies that used to be extened to strangers 10-20 years ago.  They just think what ever they want they can just take.  I can't even let my kids out in the driveway with out having to worry about some pedophile scooping one of them up!
(Sorry, just a peeve of mine!   :stomp: )

Being cautious is what keeps you out of trouble, makes you lock the car/house door when you leave, and gives you the safeguard and peace of mind that you did what you had to do to protect yourself from others who may do ill will to you.  After that, there's not much else you can do.

It doesn't hurt to take precautions.  Can you lock you car in a garage or is it in the open in an alley?  Even though my car's only a '72 when I go out on vacations and such I always park another car in front of it in the driveway to make it that much harder to get to my car just for my peace of mind.  Never know, there might be a hot market for '72 Challengers someday!  :roflsmiley:

You could buy a clunker for a couple hundred bucks that moves and park it such that it can block others from getting to your car and so that the clunker can't be towed away that easily, like perpedicular to the way a ramp truck might try to take your car away.  (sorry, don't know how wide the alley is.)

But that would be cool if that was Chip Foose.....

I like the idea of putting security cameras in.  I also like the idea of keeping cars in front of the garage, but the garage opens right into the alley.  It would be very easy for some one to use a code scanner to get the door open.

Good thing is that I am hoping to move next year and looking for a place with land and a good place to work on cars.  When I find it, it should be easy to implement precautions.

It is good to know that I am not the only one with concerns like these too!

Thank you for the ideas.
