Summit Wheels?
« on: August 02, 2006 - 01:57:16 PM »
Hello.... anyone had any experience with these wheels:

http://store.summitracing.com/egnsearch.asp?N=400230+302049&autoview=sku

I am looking to purchase some replilca rallyes for a 72 challenger.  I'd like to have 15 x 8's in the front and 15 x 10s in the back.  What off set, backspacing, and tire size on these wheels willl work good without doing any modification to the car.

Also i'd love to see some pics of 10 inch rallyes on a car!!!

Thanks, Neil

I didnt think 10 wheels would fit on a challenger for any year?

I believe you will have to use a leaf spring relocation kit to use 10" wheels in the rear.

I'm about to do the same. I measured everything with my 15x8 4.5" backspacing and a 15x10 with a 5.5" backspace should fit perfectly.  I moved my springs in 1" and put in an early B-Body rear end.

I think a stock width rear end will work with the 5" backspacing wheels but will have to try it.

Summit will take them back if you make it look like you didn't mount them.

hmmm.......

How about a 15 x 10 with a 5 inch backspacing.. would that work without relocating the springs?  I'd rather not really do that... and I dont have a B body rear end laying around... hmmm

I really just want the back wheels to have a lip on them a little bigger than the front.. They dont really have to be 10's so long as they are noticably different than the fronts and come stick out from under the car a little..

Any ideas... how about a 8 inch rallye with 3 inch backspacing and 5 inch front?.. they sell those anywhere?

The 10 inch wheel with the 5 inch backspace would probably work and not hit the spring but it would stick out an inch past the quarter panel on the drivers side. about even on the passenger side.

A better Idea is to get the 8 1/2"wheel on the back with 5 inch backspacing.
Interestingly, I fit a wheel like that on the front of my '72 and it worked great with 245s with no mods to the body but I didn't drive it so check carefully before trying it.  Like on a car that needs bodywork anyway   :poopoke:

The car in the pic has the 10" wheel on the back with 5" backspace and 295s but that's with the B-body spring kit.  The front of that car has the 8 1/2" with 3 inch backspacing (mainly because I had it laying around) but the front and the top of the wheelwell is modified to fit.
It was the eighties,,, I know now that it was wrong to cut and weld   :nono:

if your just looking for the appearance of wider, you could either run 15x7 up front, or like 15x8s all around , but with 4 or 5 inch backspace in front and 3 in back it would widen the stance some, and appear to be a deaper wheel due to the backspace difference you would have to mesure and see how far in you can go in front and how far out in back. larger rubber in back is going to help the look.just have to figure out what works. unless your runing mega power 10 is a bit wide in back, and for a cruizer car a 15x7 is plenty of wheel up front. didnt most of these cars come on 14x6?

The "GOOD" ones came with 15x7s.   I checked out my friends 71 Challenger tonight.
He is running a 15x8 Magnum, B-body 8-3/4, Modified front hangers 1" and Mopar 3/4" offset rears. He is running 295x65x15s and is out of room to add any more width on either side. the side walls clear on both sides, but this is a very tall tire. A 9" or 10" wheel would make everything rub on the insides or outsides.  If you stick with an 8" wheel, I think that you'll be okay.

hmmmm... thanks alot... guess I will go with 15 x 7's on the front and 15 x 8s on the back... I'll probably go with a 4.5 inch BS on the back and 4.25 BS for the front.  I'm thinking on some 235/60s and 275/60s or 275/55's.

What looks better on the back.. 275/60s or 275/55s?  Also how wide of tire can I run on the front with 15 x 7s with a 4.25 backspacing??

I'm also considering AR torque thrust.. what would be an ideal size in this wheel?

Well.. I ordered the wheels.  They came from Vintage Wheel, I got 15 x 8s and 15 x 7 rallyes.   I haven't bought tires yet but cant decide between 275/60s or 275/55s....  any advice for the back?

275/60's out the back, a little more wall looks better IMO.  295's are a waste in my opinion if you don't convert to a B-Body rear and/or relocation kit. On a stock E-Body rear end 15x10 will fit with a 5 to 5-1/2" BS but you won't be able to fit 295's in (pretty sure about that) so you can only go 275. which is the same s a 15x8" rim to begin with.........

Good wheel decision.

I just put the magnum 15x8 4.5 BS with 235 60 BFG's on the front and 15x10 275 60 BFG's on the back with 5.5 BS and it fits perfectly.  Still waiting on center caps.

I have 275/50s on the back of my Challenger.    In the front I have 60 series, (225 ?  I forget) but, on purpose, the front tires end up being the same height as the rears (= same sidewall height) , only the rears are simply wider where they meet the road (tread).

When I had 15x8 rims in the back, the driver tire would rub the fenderwell on turns and bumps when I had people in the backseat.  and there was maybe a 1/2 clearance to the leaf spring.

the last two rim sets I have been running 15x7s all around and have been much happier.  good luck.

Welll...  I thought I had ordered my wheels ... turns out there was a problem with summit.  I ended up ordering them today from Jegs.  I got 15 x 7 with a 4.25 BS  and 15 x 8's with a 4.5 BS.
I went ahead and ordered Bf goodrich radial T/As 275/60/15s and 235/60/15s.   Everything should be here by tuesday except the center caps.  I ordered the 70' light grey center caps so they'll take about 2 weeks  to get here they said.

Anyways it wasn't too bad of a lick I don't suppose.  $1002.70 for everything.  I'll post some pics next week

Thanks for everyones help and advice

Wellp... wheels came in.. I didn't realize that rallye's where so darn plain.  they are pretty much a plain steel wheel.  What a difference trim rings and center caps make.

Well the front 235 BFGoodrich's are on back order.. but i'll have some pics soon!
