How to change ignition switch
« on: August 03, 2006 - 06:43:43 PM »
Basicaly, I'm completly in the dark about how this comes apart.

Any pointers on getting the steering column apart and the ignition cylinder out?

I know. It's time for to buy a shop manual. :-)

pull the wheel & crush can , then remove the lock plate & there is a plate that holds the lock lever in place remove that & below it is a push pin that retains the lock cyl

OK, got as far as the crush can and I got stuck. D'oh!

I removed the large bolt in the center expecting the can to just come right off. Nope.

Figured I would ask before I began pulling on things and break something.

What else besides that bolt is holding the can on?

A very tight spline fit.  You need a steering wheel /hub puller.  Its available at most generic and good parts stores.  Don't try to muscle or pry the can off, you'll just damage it.

I had to modify my puller with a longer center bolt & 3/8 bolts to remove the can

My '70 Challenger was a column auto but somebody has installed a floor mounted slapstick. I may need to replace the column or at least the upper parts. What if any other MOPAR product steering column can be interchanged with this? :clueless:  Thanks in advance. While on the interchangability theme what other headlight switch & wiper switch can be used? Not sure if it is a 3 or 2 speed wiper at this time.
